    Busted cv joint

Can anyone advise? My '95 ABY Coupe, driverside rear cv joint let go at the weekend! Splines are gone of the drive which has been removed. I have snipped the speed control cable on the rear diif lock as it's my daily driver. Can I drive safely with the diff permanently locked or am I going to fry it? What speed and for how long can I drive with the diff locked without causing more damage? Need to cover lot of miles tomorow!

I locked the diffs on my old cq (type 85) and drove that around for a day or so no problem. I've heard of people doing it before, have you drove it already far?

Just covered twenty miles or so today mostly in traffic with no problems. Notchy turning on full lock but you'd expect that. Motorway tomorrow so don't want to have pay for breakdown recovery!

        John,

Phone or text me if you want a "loan" of a CV joint or a loan of CV joint and drive-shaft tomorrow morning?

        Kind regards.

you're putting a lot of stress on the diff and locking machanism - i definately wouldn't advise it for more than a few miles at low speeds. Definately NOT on the motorway

If its the rear right outside CV joint then the part number you need is 8A0 407 305/451GX.
The CV is The same as one found on A4 2.8/2.6 Quattros made in of similar time (years)
pop down to a breaker and im sure you can buy one cheap. !
I just did that today as i broke my CV over the weekend as well.

You can crawl under the car and unlock the diff by hand,it's only a vac pump all you do is pull the lever and hey presto its unlocked. Hope this is of some help to you?
Just some finishing touches to do now

I think he means he's locked the diff so he can drive it with one CV joint destroyed

I don't think it's a very good idea at all to drive the car any serious distance in the state you describe. Unless your life absolutely depends on it, ie Volcano/flood ect, then I'd find another method of transport or take up Dave's offer of a spare CV joint and get up a couple of hours early.

Big thanks to David in Dublin, his brother Stephen, Mark and Paul for help, guidance and more assitantance than they bargined for in fitting a new outer rear CV joint on Saturday last.

Called with David on Wednesday who left work especially to pull a complete drive shaft, with joint,s out of one of his avants only to later discover it had larger splines than my coupe.

Picked up a new CV joint in Dublin before lunch Saturday, locked the keys in the car (don't ask), got back to David's around lunch-time and then the fun started. Four hours later - on my way!

                      Thanks lads!!!
(+ David's other-half, provider of lunch and minder of my two wee'ins for the day!)

P.S. drove around all week nice'n easy with rear shaft removed, diff locked without any signs of damage.
