    recommend me a car

    Guys.

as you may or may not know along with the S2 i got "Roverdose" a 620 sdi.

its a run about bought last year for 12 months then the scrappers. its been great really. 60mpg, gets the fishing kit in, took me and mates to Glastonbury last year 520miles on 48 quid fully loaded.

its time for a new one. im thinking about a different car though.

i need really a diesel. 630cc injectors on S2 daily driven work well for esso, bp and tesco.

im fairly open minded about it. it needs to be able to get me down bumpy lanes full of fishing gear, get through the field at glasto and look reaonable to boot.

    ive looked at

    audi A6 2.5tdi Quattro
    audi allroad
    volvo v70 d5.

i find an a4 tdi a bit plasticy compared with the A6. probly the same but maybe not.

i have even thought about a 530d. Any experience of them at all.

throw your suggestions at me please.

    no auto's

    cheers

Volvo v70 and the a6 tdi quattro are both nice cars, can't say i have driven or infact been in the a6 but my dad has a v70 disesasel and it's a lovely bus,at the end of the day
you have to ask yourself which is better value for money overall
allroad IS plasticy-just look at the front of it-reminds me of those reanult scenic "4x4" things
    It's a love/hate relationship with the S2,i love it,it hates me

A6 or Allroad sound nice, large, comfy and eonomical, just servicing to worry about... need a decent local specialist really to keep the stamps in the book.

A6 would go well with a remap,200bhp and bags of torque
That said those beemers aren't supposed to be shy, build quality is good
i don't think there would be huge differeces between that and the a6 costs wise either.
Interesting in the snow i bet

I'd say Allroad is nice, large and comfy !

The V6 TDi engine is no fuel miser though... plenty of go in it at 180bhp though. Ours is tiptronic and averages 28mpg on normal weeks of relatively short runs. Does better at mway cruising 70-80mph of course but it is one big heavy lump. Can be very expensive to keep on the road too if air suspension components go bad... BTDT.

I's suggest the older A6 with 2.5liter 5 pot diesel is a cheaper wagon to run - available in FWD or quattro, saloon or avant - circa 1995-1998 from memory - allegedly good for 140mph and 40mpg out of the box.

A6 2.5 Tdi are about the worst engines when it comes to problems AFAIK.

Fuel pump and cams are likely to fail.

I'd say the older 5pot A6 2.5TDi aswell. I used to have a 5 speed fwd version, it was certainly lacking that 6th gear on the motorway but sat at 80mph it was great, and would give over 50mpg, even with 180,000miles on the clock. On the daily commute (only 7miles total) it would never drop below 45mpg. Comfort was top notch, build quality was above the S2's and it was bulletproof, other than a boost leak (ic hose wore through due to rubbing the slam panel) nothing went on it.

Great to drive too, if a little wobbly, but handled very well and bumps were flattened out of the way and never an issue. And the engine pulled like a train, 30mph in 5th on tickover was nice. I'd have another anyday, but must be a 6 speed. My Dad has a 2001 A6 1.9TDi and its nowhere near as good build quality and not as nice to drive either.

Plus, they're cheap too but easy to work on...

That is perhaps a bit harsh... from what I've picked up the cam problems were on early engine variants. Agreed that any fuel pump of that type on a modern diesel is going to be big bucks to fix... but not a unique problem to Audi V6 TDi... this is as much a stitch up problem by the pump manufacturers who do not supply seal / refurb kits so that old/tired/failed pumps can be refurbed... ohhh no - they want to stitch us up for megabucks to buy a new pump - even if failure is repairable by a 3 dollar seal.

I've only ever heard good reports on the 5-pot TDi so you can't go too far wrong... Very good compromise of fuel vs performance for a big old diesel donkey.

I drive a V70 D5 regularly. Its a good motorway cruiser and practical, but lacks any character to drive. Big v.heavy and boatlike no feel. 180bhp moves it along ok to be fair. But you wont get through a field in it. We used it when it snowed recently and it was PANTS. Way too heavy and FWD Traction Traction control did little to help either, on or off. Its on an 05 plate, but has had a fair few niggley elec probs. I'd go Big Diesel and Quattro.
