    Clutch Issue

Hello guys. I was driving home tonight in my s2 and i stopped to let some cars past and when i set off i give it a foot full and then it wouldnt go into gear. The clutch pedal seems to be lighter but still seems to be operating. If you press the clutch down and try to get a gear it just wont move from neutral but with the engine off it goes in a treat as if the clutch isnt clearing. It seems as tho the clutch fingers have worn away or have become weak. Is there any common faults? Any ideas???????????????

Pressure plate has failed - probably because the supporting wire underneath the fingers has broken. It's happened to me twice

If you take it apart & find it is the pressure plate, I recommend you replace it with one from an Audi dealer. It's reasonably priced because it's exchange and it gives a nice light clutch which is fine if you have an unmodified or relatively unmodified car.

Exact same thing happened to mine, the weld on the supporting wire fails and the ring springs open and jams between the fingers and pressure plate limiting release of clutch. If when in gear it still pulls fine id put money on it being that. I ended up changing all the mounts and subframe bushes while it was in bits!

Its a pain though as the PP and clutch look fine, both friction plates Ive removed from high milage ABYs were on the original clutch and only worn 1mm!! Clutch kit is around £150+Vat

I paid around £70 to the Stealers for an exchange pressure plate. I didn't change the friction plate the second time as I couldn't measure any wear and it had only done 50,000 miles.

Cheers for the help lads. I was thinking it was something like that. Is it a bad job to remove the gearbox?

Sounds like a 2 post lift job with the help of a transmission jack. Satarday job i would say

Well got the car done yesterday. Only took me 7 hours with a 2 post lift and the transmission jack . You were all right to the pressure plate retaining clip had snapped. So i got the new one fitted and banged it back together and the pedal is now nice and light .
