I remember someone posting a picture of a golf with an I5 in it a while ago, it was transverse and fwd probably. For was having a chat with a friend last night and he was claiming was a mk2 golf 20v I5 locally. I dont believe him but got me thinking about that picture someone posted but cant remember where it was as would be interested to know more about it

Martin thats it, main thing I was thinking is how they managed get the gearbox bolt up as vw and audi pattern is different. Also is enough width in the bay
This all came about as been offered a Mk2 8v for £100 and have a 7A, which is meant for a lotus 7 but my friend did abit adding for me it seems and came up a different ideas than I had. Still think his storey was made up however...
However would be different than the useful Vr6 swap which I think is too hevay while a 5 only bit more that the 4Comment

vr6 swap to heavy? Where did you hear that? My mk2 vr6 handled beatifully, and im sure Gav will agree having also owned one..
I do beleive 034 make a conversion plate to mount a vr6 gearbox to the audi i5 engine

Could go all out an do longitudinal i'm doing similar to Baz but mines RWD and a mk1 (better than then mk2
)
Transverse is beyond tight... Would need custom length driveshafts and it would be a nightmare in handling...Jay - pug_life85@hotmail.com

would have thought transverse would work better for handling. Mind you being so short the nose will tuck in no problem anyway on lift off.
Engines not overhanging the front wheels so much, but you then have the problem of building a relliable drivetrain which on a mk2 or even more so a mk1 doesnt give you any easy options.Volcano ABY coupe

Also i fail to see why you would want all the hassel and hard work and just put in a 7A engine

Weight distribution is one thing but the position of gearbox would mean exagerated offset driveshaft lengths... golf already have about a 200mm difference in lengths... with a 5pot in thats likely to become 350mm difference...would have thought transverse would work better for handling. I'm using RWD, yes quattro would be nice but engine is mounted 11" further back than in a quattro which helps with weight balance somewhat...Jay - pug_life85@hotmail.com

All interesting and valid points, main reason would think keep transverse would keep original golf handling and chassis
If the gearbox and all had be shifted woudlent bother as torquesteer would be horrible no doubt
Would love to get offered a mk1 but anything beats mk3 imho
