Welding Equipment...

Another Dumbass question from you know who.....

I am thinking about buying a DIY welding kit for doing small jobs at home basically for the cars.. But who knows what else I might use it for....

But it's years since I have done any welding and the equipment has moved on from what I used to use that I am now confused as what to buy...

Any one got any ideas as to whats best have been looking at the following items...

Arc Kit;...

Arc is for welding tractors...

No-gas is for 'pidgeon ****' welds...

Go for mig...

MIG is the way to go, I have a both a MIG and Inverter based Arc (upgradable to TIG) welder. MIG is so much cleaner and refined, there is the gas (the bottle has a yearly rent ) but thats the only downside. There are a few more variables when dealing with MIG (e.g wire speed) but it comes to you after a while.

Cheap MIG welders have one thing in common - poor wire feeds. I spent ages battling with my SIP until I converted the wire feed to PWM. Head over to BOC and rent a bottle of Argo Sheild light and a decent regulator. The bottles that you buy in Halfords last all of 2 minutes.

Agreed a proper bottle and autotint visor make your life that much easier... the extra cost is easily recovered by less headaches.

Regulator is very handy, try get a twin gauge (i got mine for BOC bottle fitment off ebay for £25 delivered).

Spend about an hour practicing the technique and angles etc and just generally practice on different thicknesses of material etc. Do the basics and the machine does the hard work
