I've been doing some work on a mates Seat Ibiza Cupra and one of the jobs was to replace the dual mass with a rigid flywheel and new clutch.
We got the clutch kit from JKM, its basically a Audi flywheel and a VR6 cluth kit from Sachs.
Anyway I fitted the setup yesterday and when I ran the car up there was a metal on metal sound coming from the clutch/flywheel area, I suspected it was the backing plate the engines run between the engine and box which meant taking the whole bloody lot off again.
I spoke with JKM this afternoon and they hadn't ever had to remove that plate or had this problem before so off came the box and flywheel and sure enough the plate had been touching. I removed the plate and re fitted the flywheel and noticed the flywheel was still very close to the block so I measured it, 20 thou clearance seemed a tad close.
Anyway to cut a long story short I then pulled on the flywheel and there was a large knock as the lot moved, now I'm not sure what the normal crank float is on these engines but this is atleast 2mm if not more which without even looking it up I know isn't right.
Whats odd is I would of expected something like that to of caused some sort of problem, looking back on it you can see where the old flywheel had been touching the main crank seal housing at some point so this must of been going on for a while and maybe explained the poor clutch engagement.
What sort of centre main bearing arrangement do these engines run ? is it common for them to go like this ? the engine runs perfect and recently made 198hp/250lbft so its not like it was showing and sort of faults, the clutch pedal only operated on the floor and there was a bit of noise when you pressed the clutch which was the reason to swap from the dual mass to a better setup.
Either way looks like its engine out tomorrow swiftly followed by the crank but I'm still a bit stunned this has been working so well like this with the fault !
