    exporting advice

well, it's been a dog's age since i've logged in here...mainly because i don't own anything 5 cylinder anymore! BUT, after about 3 years of life serving me nothing but crap, things MAY be turning a corner for me . this should be confirmed within the next 2 months.

So, I'm seriously considering either an S2 avant or maybe stumping up for a full blown RS2 (so i can REALLY squish my dog's head against the rear glass!) and importing to Canada within the next year. i bought a B5 A4 avant last year and have really fallen for the overall usefulness this size of car offers. now i kinda want the daddy! the other option could be an S6+ avant...

Seeing as this transaction would be far more complex than simply importing from the states (which i've done 3x now) i'm looking for anyone's advice or experience...and later possibly help in finding a good one.

what kind of red tape would i face purchasing a car in europe as a non resident? i realize most of you guys here are in the UK but from what i understand, there's a fair amount of importation from the mainland as it is. I have no idea if i would have the same procedure as you???? how would the VAT work for me? IIRC, non europeans get a break, but maybe not on a car??? Most importantly, will I be allowed to drive it to the port...via the nurburgring

I realize this is a pretty general question but I'm hoping that you guys may help me out.

Canadian RS2 has recently imported an avant into Canada, so might be worth having a chat with him...

ISTR there are some funnies about cars that were sold in Canada, pretty sure the S2 and RS2's never were so you should be ok. I got in a horrible mess trying to get my 90Q back and gave up in the end.

Speak to someone who knows about it or has done it as I found the resources on the net all conflicted and govt dept wernt much better. Have a feeling QC has different rules too

Drop me an email I brought in a Volcano black '94 RS2 last year. I have also brought in parts cars in the past, different process.

        Cheers, Mike Hopton

Archiboy, where in Calgary are you?
I had a shop on Flint Road SE, still have contacts down there and can import small stuff if need be.

I'm in the SW. Work downtown. What's the name of the shop?

Going back a bit now, would have been retrosystems/geosurplus depending on when you passed it. Started out alongside Glenmore, right next door to where all that solvent went up years ago.

I exported a car from Germany a couple of years ago. That part was easy, but it can be tricky when the car you have isn't sold in the country you are importing it. Getting type approval and showing the car meets safety and emissions requirements and so on can be difficult.

There's quite a bit of paperwork to do in Germany, so my advice is get to the traffic office nice and early. But it's all fairly logical.
I got export insurance from the ADAC which was valid for a month, but you can pay more for longer periods. The expiry date is then pressed onto the export registration plates. You'll then be fine to drive it around the Ring and onto the port.

Here in the UK it was difficult to get an insurance company to recognise the car, and with no UK insurance, you can't register the car. It's also difficult to insure a car with no registration. Lots of running around in circles.

Do plenty of homework on what paperwork and procedures you'll need to sort out for importing it into Canada.

mobile.de is one of the best places to search IME.

                    HTH & good luck.

I thik thats the sticky bit. ISTR that the requirements for importing the car were pretty strict. You may not import a car that is available there. EG my old Astra SRI wasnt allowed in as the Pontiac Le-Mans is the same car.

I would hope, that given there are close reletives of the S/RS2 out there, it shouldnt be too bad. Just hope they dont make you put them godawful bumpers on it. You then have the out of province inspection to do I'd have thought.

I may be wrong as this is all from memory.
