was thinking about hacking a bloody great hole in along side the airbox in the inner wing and making some sort of enclosure with a cone filter and a NACA duct in the wing?

It does make a difference, to both noise and performance, I perhaps went a little overboard but the results from the various RR days were strong so it doesn't not work (if you follow me). Linky.

I also managed to fit in a 4" cold air feed from the grille (this made a great difference) and have fabricated a heat shield to further help keep the airbox cool. Linky.

As Terry says, the inner wing is an untapped resource, depends how serious you get. There was discussion on an MTM airbox recently by twoqu.

The pic you have was done by dest. There's also a cold air intake that Doug_RS2 did back in the day, using the oil cooler duct. I'm sure there are others too.

It's worth the effort as a correclty soreted airbox and cold air feed wok better than a cone filter IME. Mine runs much better with the 4" feed.

im going to try and plumb in a cold feed for it tomorrow, will modify the inner wing in a couple of weeks when i strip the car to paint it

ive got an aby airbox with holes cut in the front, got the cold air feed pipe to refit to the oil cooler inlet pipe.
same spec engine as yours so will be interesting to see if it makes much difference

chipped by mihnea mrc just under 2 bar, allegedly 370bhp

im only running 1.5~1.6 bar and the v stream is 1.9 bar, will be interesting to see what it does on the rollers, doubt mines making 370 though! Doesnt feel quick enough
