Engine Life expectancy?

Hi guys,

I'm currently looking at a couple of potential S2 purchases and have a general question about the engines. As almost all examples out there now have high mileages(with a few expensive exceptions), what is the rough life expectancy in miles of an S2 engine before they need a rebuild(or ,god forbid comething like this http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=40893 happens ) ?

I know theres a lot of factors such as how theyre looked after/driven and all that, but just wondering if there is a ballpark on how long these engines should last?

Also, if the worst were to happen, how much does a rebuild cost anyway(to stock setup)?

My S2 has done 348000km now. I plan to do a rebuild next year as it seems to need balancing. It feels rough around 3500rpm.

if its been treated to some regular tlc in terms of oil changes etc then 200k miles will not even stress it...

I asked this question when looking to buy Matt_D's on here, which had 171k on the clock.
Its just clocked 180k last month and is running sweet as a nut!

My old girl has about 222,000 miles on the clock, and she's just done a 400 mile round trip to Hull no problem

2.3 Audi NG 90 was still going strong at 190K when I sold it a year ago. It had been raced and generally abused, at least 10K of those were harsh dirt/gravel track miles.

2.0 Audi NG 100 managed to soldier on to just shy of 300K before seizing due to a faulty oil punp it had had since 230K so close to 70K with I bar max pressure. Says somethign for durability. Bloke that had ot from me just couldnt be bothered, then after 3 years like this and much disbeleif it was still going, it gave out.

My s2/ABY is on 180K and still sounds sweet as if you ignore the PAS pump

My 100/AAH has literally just ticked over 200 k (on 210 now) and other than a leaky slave cylinder on the clutch is fine. Engine sounds beutiful.

Routinely hear of NG and older engines clocking up stupidly high milages in the old 100s here. Last time I spoke to a mate of mine (4 years ago) his A reg 100 Avant was well over 300K and still going.

From experience and what I've hear, there are other things that will give out long before the engine. Aforementioned 300K+ Avant needed a Subframe and ISTR some major brake repairs. My 90 ate all four wheelbearing within an month of each other. The S2 seems to have chewed up both front ones at the same time and some bushes are lookign really tired. The 100 just looks like it was used in the filming of Mad Max or Blues Bros and I'll let you know after the MOT on thurs.

Just had the head off mine at 127K miles and the honing marks were still looking like the day the engine was built.

Even my Audi trained mechanic was surprised how healthy it looked, considering the abuse I give it. From the bore wear he reckons the engine is 'nearly run in'

I know of a certain business, who, when confronted with a customer and a car with 160k, who wanted to go to in excess of 320bhp from standard (without touching the bottom end), basically said, "We'll do it, but you'll have to take responsibility if it goes bang, after all, it’s 160k old"... With work completed, I saw the car again about 4 years later, in for a routine service... 211k on the clock and going strong... Can’t think of many engines that'd take that....

I can only think of one, KR/9A/6A but it is an Audi in line 5 with a cylinder missing

my aby coupe has done over 200k and currently running 370bhp and 400lbsft on a stock bottom end...

mine (371000km) runs very smooth with almost no vibrations. It idles very stable. As some people here said before everything around the engine does not last that long. I have replaced all tubings, radiators, just recently the alternator. So what's next? A new service booklet as it is full. :-) Certainly not the engine that's for sure.
