Touching up paintwork - metallic & rattle cans

I'm taking my engine out soon to change my rack, and will be removing the battery box and moving the battery to the ABY box i installed under the rear seat.

Also got some rust in a few places in the engine bay as well as needing to paint the turrets tops where i welded in the brace mounts, so theres a bit of tidying to do.
Can't be arsed trailering the car to a body shop and paying for a proper spray, so planning on getting some rattle cans mixed up.

My paint is LY9Z metallic panther black so i know i need to use laquer too.
Any advice on doing this to a decent standard?

    cheers guys

You could "get away" with it in the engine bay, especially as your car is black. The biggest problem you will have is blending the edges of the new lacquer over the old, unless you have an area with seams that you can mask off. I would say go for it, most of the hard work is in the prep...

      Cheers,

      Steve.

Degrease... Rub down to key the paint in... Degrease again - Prime

        Degrease again and paint...

Don't try and put too much paint on at once... Build up layers slowly & let it dry properly...

        Degrease again & Laquer....

I use a pre paint pad... It's a bit like a scourer pad you use on pots & pans, finner than wet & dry... If you are just wanting to key in the paint...

If is rusty then wet & dry and treat... Very Fine filler and then the paint pad...

Like Steve said 90% of it is prep work... The more you do the better the finish should be...

I sell airbrushes at work and have done for 30 years... and those are no use for normal car paint... You have to thin them too much...

The finish you can get with some cans with GOOD quality paint is amazing these days...

Try your local body shop supplier, if they can put the colour you want into a can it will be about half the price of paints for you

NOOO!!!! Aerosol cans should not be used for anything more than cam covers and the metal rings around the gauges!! It will look fine for a short while, then it will all start flaking off and melting off through the heat from the turbo. Just clean the original paint and spray over it will penetrating oil, WD40 or similar and it will look fine!! honestly!! I'd be put off buying an S2 if someone had aerosol'd the engine bay.

You'd rather buy a car that had been touched up with Plusgas than paint?

TBH when i do my 20vt engine i will be stich welding the front inner wing & chassis rails etc so the whole bay will be resprayed properly then, just want to tidy up the few little bits of rust etc while the engine is out, its not a long term fix.

No not a releasing agent, penetrating oil you can buy in 5 litre tins, its general purpose but widely used for making your engine bay look gleaming. Its what the trade use! It just generally lubricates everything, helps prolong the life of any rubber hoses etc, stops corrosion on bare metals and protects the paint. I cleaned my engine bay over the weekend and used it....
