I thought I'd add my tuppence worth on classic insurance, especially for folk with low NCB.
Basically, if your car is over 15 years old & is a "prestige" make, & you're over 25 years old, you can get it insured as a classic.
It makes no difference if you've no NCB (although points & location make a bit of difference.), as "classic" insurance doesn't count towards NCB anyway & it's not factored into the premium, nor is your age. The prices seem to hold steady as well. For instance, I had an '86 BMW E30 325i when I was 28 (1998, back in the mists....) & it cost me £210 pa. Last year I finally sold it, & was paying £207 pa for the same policy in 2009.
I'm 40 (with zero NCB, as I've only had classic insurance for the last 10 years) & my girlfriend (27) as a named driver. All my policies are fully comp, with a good breakdown cover that includes if you want to get your car taken from home to a workshop or whatever. 5000 mile limit. My car premiums at the moment are;
'86 BMW 635 CSi - £210
'86 BMW M6 - £180
'95 Audi S2 - £160 (that's a rough guess, it actually cost me £25 to add to the others + £19 for the breakdown)
'80 Aston Martin Vantage, modded with massive carbs & overbored to 5.7 litres - £290
I was in a horrific accident a few years back, & it was all sorted properly (although I'd done about 800 miles over the 5000, & had forgotten to pay my premium for a couple of months!!). They just don't seem quite as **** as yer standard insurance bods, although the companies that you're actually with are national names, the brokers seem to act as middle-men in your favour....which is nice!
When I bought my S2 Avant, I had actually started off looking at A4/A6/Allroads. I wanted a safe car (2 kids as well) for the winter (see above list, all 2 handfuls in the wet, impossible in snow!). Virtually all of them were younger than the 15 year mark, & I was getting quotes (no NCB see) from £600+ for a 2.5 TDi. So I looked at the S2s, quick, interesting car for the same money, that'll hold its value & well cheap to insure? No contest!
By the way, I'm not a lousy insurance salesman, I just hate seeing people pay over the odds when there may be no need!!
Cheers, Iain
