    RS4 noise vs IL5

Just thinking about maybe selling the S2 and getting an RS4, but I would/will REALLY miss the noise of the IL5. Anyone know how an RS4 (2.7 B5) sounds in comparison?

Hmm, a question I can answer. I have both.

Depends what's on the RS4. Standard is quiet. You can hear the crowl of the V6 granted, but it's not as brash as the 5cyl.

Milltek'd with a resonated system it's louder, non resonated and even louder again.
They are two very different sounds between them.

A hard question to answer really. Try describing a sound

This is what I hear in my RS4 >>> Linky

RS4 is a beauty to drive, what puts me off is running costs of them are sky high, you need one sorted with the major problems done

They both sound great, i put a miltek on my RS4 but didnt like it so sold it on (to boomy).

I have replaced the middle box with a 3" box. The original is from an S4 and it steps down to 2.5" and steps back up to 3" after it...

Gutted the pre-cats and its more than acceptable.

I couldent choose over either of them.. but they are both very different to drive which in truth is more important than how it sounds...

in line 5 for me! I was thinking to buy a B5 S4 but (beside the turbochargers problem it has and the expensive maintenance) a v6 doesn't have that particular sound the 5pot engines have! V6 is a bit common... the VR6 sounds a lot better. Make a biturbo IL5 RS4

if it is sounds that you are worrying about, you will like them equally in the end. The problems mentioned above are the most important. If you thought there is little space around the I5 motor to work on... think again when looking at the 2.7TT!

The V6 is silky smooth and produces effortless performance, an unsileneced exhaust makes it sound like a D type Jag racer from the 50s but that's rather extreme. As per the S2, they're well insulated so even a loud exhaust can sound quite quiet inside.

I like my I5, if you get it in a confined space then it sounds like a rally car with the odd pop and splutter It's also more involving to drive than the refined S4 but that's not necessarily a plus for eveyday use.

Tough call really, RS4s certainly look special but noise alone, I'd stick I5

yup, my old 300zx TT was super smooth, didn't even feel turbo'd. you just surfed a wave or torque from 1500rpm all the way to the redline... but it suited that car, which i'm sure is the case for the (R)S4 too, its a bahnstormer at the end of the day not a sports coupe

Good friend of mine recently traded his RS2 for a B5 RS4 that has been through MTM treatment with a claimed output of 463ps.
We will soon see how much power/torque it puts to the wheels, and more importantly, its 60-90, 60-100, FATS times, etc.
Will report on the sound as well.

I've been asked the question loads, "what's it like compared to the S2??"

Answer is, and I think Darren will agree, they don't.
You just can't compare them at all. Entirely different.

Not a chance, I know how much i've put in compared to an RS4 owner who's replaced the turbos and cams recently and I'm far better off!

My money has been spent on mods not maintenance, suppose that is the big difference

Running costs are high for me which puts me off not other RS4 owners
