As title I'd be interested if anybody had any insight into rallycross or autocross. I've seen some photos from switzerland or austria of an s2, other than that I haven't seen any other s2's used. I suppose the 6R4 Metros are in a different league weight wise. We have a popular rallycross series here in Ireland, I'm tempted to get a car together.
Any Rallycross / Autocross Drivers on here? Audi or other

always on motors tv. my mates in the supercars class using a home built impreza and does quite well considering the money put into the class winning cars -
where abouts is the rallycross going on over here?
Im interested in doing something myself, but im leaning towards a track car, rather than a rallycross car.84 URQ 20VT

quattro84 will have some input on this one I guess.
My brother is an autocrosser but in a different league, standard 1600 class in a Scirocco, lots and lots of them get wrecked in autocross each year.
I'd get a track car instead of cross car.Comment

Supercars is the 4x4 class if I'm right. I won't be spending daft money 'cos I don't have it. Was watching it the other night. Bumper to bumper the whole way round.
Mondello park, 1st day out this year is the 17th October. I'll be heading up with a friend who's keen to build a rally car. More than welcome to tag along if you can make it to my place. It's a 50:50 at the moment between track / rallycross.
Fun is what I'm after and somewhere to get competitive.
The league wouldn't bother me, wrecking scirocco's wouldn't either TBH. I could easily turn my s2 into a track slag but there are loads of cheap cars that could be competitive at rallycross like the subaru above.
Certainly interested to see what quattro84 thinks.ShaneComment

Autocross in the Netherlands is a cheap class compared to circuit racing. We don't have that amount of tracks laying around like you lot have.
I don't know about the competition in the UK, but overhere it is good. Lots of young people involved starting in the low budget classes which are pretty equal due to the regulations (the so called standard classes). Participation with an standard Audi isn't recommendable, and not even possible here because standard classes are limited to 2000cc engines.
But we do have the touringcar class. Basic rules: Anything up to 8 cilinders and 3,5litres are allowed, so is turbocharging. 4WD is allowed on any chassis. Engine make has to be equal to body make. Original mounting point of the suspension have to be used.
This can lead to different interpretations... This class used to be dominated by turbocharged Hayabusa's mounted in homebuild chaindriven 4wd's Suzuki Swifts and so on.

Next generation is even more extreme.. similar to Rallycross cars.

But we were talking Audi's right?
I know of two S2's formally (but recently) used in the Dutch autocross touringcar championship.
Both weren't succesfull, mostly because of driveability factors.
The total car weight and the lumpy engine up front make it hard to steer on bendy tracks.
But that can be compensated by engine power, as long as it can be used track-wise.
A guy from my town used a typ85 CQ and shortened it. That made it turn a lot better (strange, perhaps that's why the SQ...?
)
I was involved with a friend's build, typ89 CQ with AAN+GT30 turbo. 350WHp/550Nm@3.5k rpm
First race on OEM knackered shocks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDtNh...layer_embedded
Firmed up the suspension with a proper coilover kit. Grip-wise it seems to be fine. Now about the handling...
Best way of setting up the car is looking at what Audi rally did:
Firm up the suspension, get rid of any slack in the driveline & play in the suspension with solid bushes, lock the centerdiff, add huge amounts of caster of the front, and try to place as much mass at the utter back of the car.
Build a beafy engine with useable torque curve. Don't overdo it on power nor revs, but make it reliable.Comment

Quattro84 and I did some work on this car.
Car is built by us and is just for fun... actually that was the first intension but now it has some proper setup Reiger suspension. Here are some testing vids.
Hope you like it

, There are limited enough track days in Ireland so setting up for a season of 6 races in rally cross would be easy enough. I'll have to start with something 2wd from the vw / audi family I think.
Is the s2 competitive when it has a good set up?ShaneComment

Everything can be made to be competitive with an unrestricted budget...
Go for the typ89 coupe quattro. As good as a base to start with, upgrade it when it fails. No need for 5 stud driveline.
Some parts will fail just like the VW parts such as the snubmount and the steering arm bracket on the rack.
Overcome the weight issue with some extra power. (it improves the handling as well)
And yes i am sure it is a winner with the proper setup and a driver that knows how to handle it. But remember that quattro rules. It humiliates all other AWD systems in the dirt.Comment
