Focus RS - A brief encounter

Just had one in my mirrors, and a 3rd gear opportunity to pass a truck from about 45 ish into a long straight stretch open open tarmac to see what would happen. I probably got the jump a little bit in 3rd as I pulled away rather well initially but as we got well into 4th gear he was gaining on me - definitely getting bigger in the mirror, but certainly not capable of roaring past me. I lifted off before things got silly...

Given I am ~20bhp and ~200kg worse off than him - I didn't think it was a bad show for a tired old teenaged S2 against Ford's 'fastest ever' saloon car. I even got a respectful toot of acknowledgement when we parted ways.

A small hybrid turbo, mapped for some extra oomf would have beaten it though... I am sure of that. At least until any corners - LOL.

lol i dont think they are that much better on the corners either. unless the road is super smooth.

i have not had a play with one yet. ive had couple chicken out though. i think my noise puts them off.

the game i play is to set off normal rather than rev it. rev and clucth drop it may loose me my standard clutch lol. then i wind it up. usually they are just creaping past the front of my bonnet as the boost kicks in. you can imagine what almost 2 bar does then to the unexpected punter.

i have had a tts try it. in first he pulled a car or 2 with my setoff. i then needed all 12 pots in second gear to stop me running in the back of him.

go for a BIG hybrid :mischeif:and no need to worry bout said corners

Yeah but not mental quick. A chipped S2 holds one off (just) and one breathing more air thru a bigger turbo would trounce it.

One of the new new ones i'm assuming? They have some pretty clever electronics onboard from what i've read.

Pretty impressive for a FWD car that's for sure.

I'd like to have a play with one when my car is in full track spec. Sounds like I'd have a lot of fun although the RS is as much about the twisties as straight line performance and I think the 25 year old design of the S2 would have 2 options. 1. Give up. 2. drive the wheels off the thing I know which way I'd go. Funny to think that my S2 would have cost the same

I dunno what vintage it was - had some funky plate on it - not that I was looking for that much detail in the mirror as the White lines in front of me were doing that millennium falcon thing :-)

I'm sure you know if it was a current version or the 8 year old one...

Quick cars for sure, had a play with one earlier this year in a Avant I'd purchased off a forum user, side by side on the M6 and there was nothing in it all the way round to 70mph officer ! lol

Sound sweet though, far from a wasted chassis as some seem to think.

its a nice chassis, but so was my corrado. on nice dry day 2wd weight and agility is great. on any other day the 4x4 of, at the time, subarus would see you off no worries. especially when the drivers of said subarus have rally licenses.

my mate has had a lambo and a rs6 thats modded in his garage. he reckonsthat the S2 would have a great chance against either.

for me the only ford to fear a potential loss against is a cossie. my issue now is round my way a certain green S2 is becoming a known car so i dont get many if any takers.

i wouldn't be giving up anyway andy

Let me see: I've got data from two roadtests of the Focus RS:
                          60-100mph in 8.0 and 8.9sec
                          100-200kmh in 17.1 and 18.9sec, respectively

Stock ABY S2 was tested by AMS to 23.6s 100-200km/h
                          Curiously, a Mohr tuned 260hp S2 was tested to a rather slower 25.5s 100-200km/h and 286hp SMS Revo S2 was 24.0s 100-200km/h
                          1995 RS2 on Alcohol (6.8sec 100-200km/h)
                          1994 80E Avant

So both the tuned S2's were slower accelerating 100-200km/h than standard?

Yep, pretty strange. Could have to do with shiftpoints that the different mags used.

The best thing for comparison is the 4th gear pulls that Sport Auto does from 80-180km/h, and listed in 20km/h increments.
For cars with similar gear ratios, that data is like a dyno sheet.
