    Nogaro blue b5 a4 avant

A mate bought a nogaro blue B5 A4 2.5 TDI quattro avant about a week ago.

It looked too good to be true, and sure enough, less than a week later, the timing belt went, taking most of the engine with it.

Sounds like he was a bit of a fool buying the car, and has learnt the "if it looks too good to be true" lesson the hard way.

He's had the engine looked at, to see the damage and look at the feasibility of having it repaired or replaced, but i think he's probably just after getting rid of it.

Not sure if anyone's interested? Just trying to look out for him...

Done that timing belt before on the V6 TDi - it is quite a big job with numerous special tools required to lock it up properly - which I guess is why someone avoided doing it / or just botched it up. Gotta feel bad for the poor victim. Those engines aren't that rare so if the car is otherwise good then an engine swap from a rear-ended scrapyard victim is perhaps the way forward.

Yeah it was * apparently* done only 7k ago. Looks like the belt was catching on the water pump for a while, and frayed quite badly then ripped off half the teeth. Doesn't look like the pump was replaced at the same time, either way all the valves are knackered.

He's looked at sourcing an engine from a scrapyard, prices start from around £1500, and i think he'd rather just get rid of.

From what i can see, seems to be a good car though. The interior is all leather, body looks ok from a quick glance. Auto box obviously.

There is also a tensioner and idle roller that need changed with the V6 TDi belt - and of course it makes sense to renew the other belts in there at the same time. My bet is only the belt was renewed and the owner was probably charged for umpteen other parts not used. Typical monkey mechanic nightmare where a subsequent owner gets it up the *** - just like my V6Q woes
