coupe quattro (t85) with s2 running gear, help.

New project has arrived, it is a coupe quattro type 85, 1987, formally owned by my brother in law (jenks on here). I am going to put my aby with gt3071 in it and use s2 struts, hubs, subframes etc but i want to use the coupe quattro (t85) gearbox and diff.

The part i need help with is the driveshafts, can i use the t85 driveshaft and mate it to the s2 outer cv? or is there another option. Any advice is much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Dan.

afaik use the s2 shafts with adapters machine to join them to the s2 box. i've heard of it the other way around but not this way. Can I ask why you'd want that? strength of the box?

Strength of the box and i prefer a fixed 50 50 torque split rather than the torsen, also means i do not have to modify the transmition tunnel.

I have fitted the s2 prop to my type 85 cq and I did not need to modify the tunnel. I am however about to fit the six speed s2 gearbox and have a similar question regarding driveshafts as I am keeping the original stud pattern so can you knock off the wheel side cv and use a combination of s2 and type 85 parts to make a driveshaft? Sorry for hijack.

as that has some info about using an s2 box in a type85. And also look at threads by jogi as he's doing this, iirc you need adapters/a kit to fit this.

it seems you have to use both short shafts from the urq

Just picked up a 81 Euro URQ with 100k miles.. It looks like a good one. Got it in San Diego where it spent a yea after spending it's life in Reno Nevada. The car came with no motor( well just shortblock) which i don't really care about sense it is gonna get the 10v motor of death out of my...

What I did will not help you much. The problem is that the 01e and 01a have different offsets for the half shafts. The tranmission not the same thickness flange to flange, or the same shaft lengths. In order for this to work, you need to do a measuring game like I did with my URQ.

The big problem is that the outer CV's of the s2 stuff takes the splines with a bolt, and the type85 URQ stuff is the older CV style with a nut that secures the cv to the hub. To make your life really easy, you need to choose one of these options.

-Use the original URQ stuff in conjunction with 016 locker tranmission

                - use all the stuff from your s2 donor car, including the 01a or 01e tranmission

The way I got away with mix matching the two cars is by finding the shortest possible shaft with a 108mm inner CV and the URQ style Nut retainer for hte hub. It happened to be the passenger axle. It was shorter the nI needed on both sides, so I needed to make spacers on both sides to get the appropriate length.

I am sure the same principle could be applied to what you are trying to do, I just dont know what the shortest bolt style outer CV.

Of course, if you are 01a from the 3b s2, you will also need to address the 100mm flanges that the 01a has vs the 108mm flanges that the URQ uses.

                Did that help at all?
