I am looking to diagnose the problem of my oil pressure gauge not working. No knocking or rumbling noises whilst running the engine, just no movement of the needle in the Oil pressure gauge.
Any suggestions where to look and test would be greatly appreciated.
Power gets fed to the oil pressure gauge from fuse S12 but if S12 is blown the rest of your instruments won't be working either. The oil pressure gauge has three connections, power, earth and the wire to the oil pressure sender on the side of the block known as G10. G10 is the silver tin in this picture:
The resistance of the oil pressure sender changes with oil pressure and that's what drives the gauge. The oil pressure sender is a pig to get at as the picture shows so it's probably easier to lift your oil pressure gauge out and using a multimeter see if the resistance to the sender changes with engine RPM. If the resistance is changing then it's the gauge that's faulty, if the resistance stays high then either the sender is broken of there's a break in your wiring out to the sender and you're going to have to chase it down.
Sheet 50/8 from the wiring diagrams section of the S2central.net site will help here.
The sender has two connections on it, the other one is for the low pressure oil switch which is also inside the G10 tin can. There is also a high pressure oil switch (2 bar) which is the one below in the picture. Given that there are two other sensors measuring oil pressure, it's unlikely you have a real engine oil pressure problem if it's only your gauge showing no pressure.
