Idiot Insurance companies and snow tyres

Some motorists who fit winter tyres to their car to cope with snowy conditions are being charged higher insurance premiums, it is claimed.

The mistake is being blamed on insurance company call centres, where not all staff may be aware of the safety implications.
    How incompetent is that!

hmmm i'm with bell but we've had hardly any snow so no need for me to fit them, I actually removed them from the passat a few weeks ago as there was no need for them.

You just got them on your 18's or a 2nd set of rims?

                In Germany............ Winter tyres mandatory.
In UK............... winter tyres are discouraged/you get penalised for

Actually, reminds me of when I was getting insurance quotes for the S2.

If I put down that the car had an immobiliser, the insurance quote *increased* compared to not having one.

Seems they're so ridiculously paranoid about any kind of "modification" that they've lost sight of the point entirely.

Ah well, hopefully next year I won't be here...

i wouldn't even bother telling the insurance company that I've fitted winter tyres.

If you change your tyres to anything other than what the car was originally fitted with, then its a modification. Would you declare fitting a set of toyo proxes in the summer and expect that to make insurance cheaper?

But its not just tyres, it's anything. Technically putting on a sticker or removing the aux rad is a modification.

                      That is so screwed up
Over here you must have winter tyres (x4) fitted from 1st Nov to 1st April, by law.
If you haven't and your involved in an accident, your insurance is null and void.
It's a worth while safety feature, don't UK insurance firms realise this??

**** holes. They are obsessed with not paying out, so an undeclared modification like winter tyres, or removing the aux rad is an excuse not to pay out regardless if the deviation from standard spec makes the vehicle and the environment it's driven in safer (or run a little cooler)

i noticed this morning on the news that the UK insurance council or whatever quango body it is has confirmed that putting winter tyres on the car will not attract a premium. About bloody time, i bet those who have paid out in recent weeks will not be proactively told that they didnt need to pay after all

Nah, they aren't just for when there's snow on the road. Try them through standing water and you'll realise just how much water they shift too
