get your self a 2L ADY block from a mk3/vento and swap all your standard things off your engine, including head, manifolds exhaust, all the brackets for alternator PAS pump etc, bung a new cambelt and head gasket at the same time, hay presto 135-140bhp and buckets of lovely 8v torque......Think I've got to the bottom of this now and it's not good
It's oil getting into the cylinders 2 and 3 to be precise.
Managed to break down completely the other day got towed home and began investigating.
Fuel supply Fine
Spark on all 4 good
Plugs out had a look in the cylinders, oily in 2 and 3.
Filled the cylinders with brake cleaner, turned it over on the starter with the injectors unplugged and spark plugs out. A brown shower shot across the drive
Cleaned throttle valve(oily), inlet hose(oily), MAF and air box.
Reassembled and reconfigured breather to run catch tank (empty milk shake bottle)
Now runs OK
Collected this much oil in about 100 miles

Cylinder head was reconditioned 3000 miles ago

On the plus side I reckon I will be the fastest mobile electrician in the UK tomorrow !Leave a comment:

I hate intermittent faults. You can never replicate them when your on your drive with a garage full of tools and spare parts
And the s2 loaded up with drills steps and general sparky equipment just looks wrong.
Still should have an ex AA Renault traffic soon....in all it's yellow goodness

Just wondered if you were pumping through the filter so as to check it wasn't blocked

No did not drain totally so filter should be ok. Defiantly going to look close at the pump wiring. Still reckon a fuel pressure gauge will steer me in the right direction.Leave a comment:

Wiring to the pump is notoriously flimsy, would be worth sticking a relay near the pump with a decent feed from the battery via a fuse and using the old wiring to switch it, did this on the ur and got another 3 volts at the pump.
Also, if you have an alarm/immob which breaks the fuel pump circuit, bypass that part of the immob and remake that circuit properly.
Also, did you empty the tank through the filter?Leave a comment:

Just as a side not this issue means I have to use the s2 for work for this week.
Not going to earn any money due to mpg !Leave a comment:

Defiantly feels like fuel starvation to me as it will barely idle and gets worse when you open the throttle.
Remember this only happen intermittently and will fix it's self in a flash.
Totally agree with you regarding coil I'm going to change regardless.
As for temp sensor they run rough as hell when that is disconnected/at fault and won't idle.Leave a comment:

Coil, its easier to swap than everything on the fuel side - I know as I did it all on my mk1 before I swapped the coil.
At 21 years old it won't be doing it's best anywayLeave a comment:

OK this getting worse but I'm now almost sure it's a fuel starvation issue.
I bypassed the fuel pump relay today and drained the whole tank into a jerry can all the time observing the flow, no bubbles or change in the flow occurred at all.
I'm now thinking this is a simple electrical fault in the supply to the pump as I have never heard of a fuel pump with an intermittent fault, they either work or they don't in my experience.
I'm going to change the fuel pump relay and I'm thinking of doing two things:
1. Temporarily fitting a fuel pressure gauge inside the car.
2. Temporarily running an indicator lamp from the pump terminals.
This would allow me to diagnose the pump or a loss of 12V supply agree?
Dose any body have a fuel pressure gauge I could borrow?
cheers
