Discovery vs S2: Who would win in a tug of war?

    Been arguing with a friend as to what would win in a tug of war;

His 1998 300tdi discovery, low range, diff lock, big off road knobbly tyres (insa turbos). Kurb weight 2055kg, 111bhp, 195 lb/ft of torque

or my S2 avant (when its finished) running atleast 300bhp with 205-50-16s

    On dry tarmac....

(Hypothetical question as I wouldn't risk my clutch )

Thats not really pulling the lorry up the hill the lorry can't quite get enough grip by itself, you can see the rear wheels of the tractor unit spinning, the landrover is just giving it the little helping hand it needs. That lorry weighs 32tons!!

Read the comments, there are a number of people who have worked that out aswell.

Anyway my argument is on dry tarmac!!

The gearing is why the disco would win , it has low ratio you can select , end of story.

local one to us... Okay, an old rangy, but...

They might be old bangers but they are pretty impressive when put to the test (in the right hands)...

My money is on the disco even in high box without diff lock. Oh and don't try it as the towing eye snaps off the audi!!!!!

This was an old argument i had with a friend but i was saying on wet grass.
                          With the same tyres.
He had a disco 3 i think at the time and you could only ever get drive from 2 wheels ( no diff lock, i think this was case i might be wrong.Im sure there was a model that lost diff lock)

But I always thought get two items pulling from end to end weight made no difference as they was both conected. ( sounds stupid i know.)
I did this with some models and i had some scales under the model and its weight did increase as it was pulling a weight.

An i have video of a quattro pulling a landrover out of a ditch.

Dot get me worng a new all singing eletronic one would always win. but back when a 100 bhp in a three tonne scafolding machine. i think it would be a fare fight.

I know the lower gearing would be an advatage. but i would be treating the tug of war like a power tractor boot it dig in and go for it..lol

But yeah as above post says im sure you would struggle to find a place to connect a rope to on the audi with out ripping it off.

Any way as you can see im the only true audi fan .lol... giving it hope...lol.
A yeah i bet this is nearly my worst post of 2010...

I know the chap who owns that Rangey. I met him at the British Indoor 4x4 show as his car was on display opposite our stand.

The Disco would win on dry tarmac or wet grass if its fitted with Insa Turbo tyres, either Special Track or Sahara give great dry traction and they both dig when on wet grass. A disco on road tyres on wet grass may be another story!

I built a nice disc for one of my customers. It had a Jag 4.2 Supercharged V8 in it with tiptronic box, KAM Difflocks with the LSD option in front and rear. It was mapped on an engine dyno and made over 520bhp. I'd wager that car in low box against any S2, even the monster power S2's as they just dont have the tractive effort!

Here is a little Vid of it whilst being photgraphed for Toatal Off Road Magazine. Steve the Photgrapher asked the owner if he could get the Disco sliding for a few action shots. Enjoy with the volume up.

Not a Disco, but makes for a good practical demonstration of the advantages of gearing.

The U1600 has mega low gearing and is quite heavy, hence the grip.
