the landrovers only have a centre diff lock which can only guarantee you drive of 1 wheel on each axle. (unless you have LSDs in the axles or locking axle diffs which he doens't).

So essentially, if the torsen diff on the audi does its job and locks up, you've got the same amount of drive. And if you used the rear diff lock and managed not to exceed 15mph by spinning a wheel then that would give you an advantage.

The disco will have more leverage with the wheels being a larger diameter, and its 400kg heavier, which will of course aid grip. But this could be compensated for (I'll have to refer to my rule book lol)

A discoveries' unbraked towing weight is only 100kg more than a stock S2....

Has anyone realised I havn't actually said who I think will win

Not all have a centre Diff lock, some have a Viscous coupling instead. We fitted one to the Supercharged Disco to reduce wheelspin when pulling out of junctions. When it had the standard open centre diff it was a nightmare pulling out of a junction on a lock as it would just smoke one of the tyres!

I have a couple of Jeeps, a Volvo C303, a couple of Suzuki's, a Pajero and access to various modded and standard Land Rovers if anyone fancies a tug of war against their modded S2........Don't blame me if it costs you a clutch or a couple of CV's though.....

      Paul.

You are missing a fundamental point, the disco has low ratio gears , it can get the clutch home and deliver massive torque to the the wheels at nearly a standstill , the S2 would only be able to match the torque to the wheels at 5 times the speed and as you are starting from a standstill you have no chance, diff locked or not, it's irrelevant . You don't need horse power to win just torque at the wheels , the low ratio gears give you this . I have a 1 HP winch and it could out pull a 1000 HP s2 , its all down to gearing period .

Ok, I'm into tractors etc as I have a farm. It always comes down to weight. As both machines are driving both axels, then the machine with most weight will get most grip. And that machine also has a low box gearing so will be easier on the clutch. so no way will the s2 win.

For a four wheel drive tractor they reckon about 20 to 25 HP per ton is ideal for traction. Any more just spins tires.

Reminds me of a production car trial my father and i marshalled many years ago in the snow. His 90q spent most of the day pulling cars out of the mud and snow. Including a series 1 Landrover one of the marshals was driving

Those t85 quattros were all but unstoppable with the two diffs locked, S2 isnt any way near as good. Managed to get the avant stuck the other night playing in a car park

Disco would anhialate the s2 all day long there is no two ways about it and as Paul says both the sahara and special track have excellent grip. My friend runs a jeep wrangler standard apart from a tubular manifold and some insa special tracks he pulled his dads range rover v8 supercharged up his hill in 3" snow. I got stuck in my s2 avant on the same hill in an inch and a half snow with rear diff locked etc. I just couldn't get the traction and that is why the disco would win. Save yourself the humiliation and have a drag race instead

Disco ( n I m not biased as I ve an ABY too)
Saw a press pic of one fitted to a railway track, towing carriages(think6 )
Disco weight, tyres and torque peal at low revs
S2 would probably be ripped in two
I ve used my Disco to good effect pulling hedges out ( and knocking walls down, but that wasn't on purpose, LOL)
