How competitive could be a audi S2 coupe as a trackcar??

how competitive could be a audi s2 coupe as a trackcar??

in some spanish forums the most of people is saying that our cars are useless and very bad car/chasis for use the car as a trackcar, because of the front weight and the chasis.

these people says that for example a Peugeot 205 rally,Saxo VTS 16V ,Bmw´s,Porsche 968 and 944 turbo,Renault 5 turbo , Hyunday Get, Seat Ibiza Mk2, VW Polos,Hondas, mitsubishi Evos,Subarus Imprezas, and many other cars like these are FAR and MUCH better over the S2 coupes and owns them, and they says too that this is the reason of "you dont see any audi S2 coupe runing and wining nothing" only as trackcars because in 1/4mille or some similar drag races yes, they are competitive so the audi s2 coupe is only good for open roads and fast speeds??

it seems that any other kind of cars will own our cars in a track??

because i am not a master with this,i cant add nothing to this info because surelly they have all the reason , but i would like to see some different points here, because some of your has used these cars as a track cars sometime???

thanks for ad some info to know more experiences as if our cars a complete useless as a trackcars

Compared to a lighter, better balanced car with a stiff chassis and similar power the coupe or avant / saloon for that matter is never going to cut the mustard - but when you can have a car on the track pushing 300bhp and driving all four wheels for £3k, not much will get close for the money

At the end of the day quick lap times are mostly down to the driver, and as long as you're having fun who cares?

A quattro car driven to its strengths is very fast, a quattro car driven like a BMW is useless. Slow in, fast out is the key, use to torque and grip to drive through the latter part of the corner. Get the weight pointing where you need it to using a little slip on corner entry, then use the quattro system and turbo to get a decent exit. It's very effective but isn't so easy where a sudden change of direction is converned.

What the front engined layout looses in dynamic ability, it makes up for in increased traction and braking capability and of course, the wet weather stability is very useful, as shown in the BTCC with the A4.

I've found that high speed stability, mid corner traction and corner exit speed are all excellent in the quattro, it's corner entry speed due to weight management and slow, tight corners where the quattro system is fighting itself that aren't so good.

While the weight balance isn't ideal, the chassis setup leaves a lot to be desired for track driving, of course, this can be sorted to whatever standard you like, it just depends what level of butchery is allowed in whatever race series and / or how much time, money and testing you can put in.

If nothing else, it'll be good fun and reliable, if not absolutely competitve with more modern, better developed and more conventionally designed cars.

so then it can be competitive for the same money expent true?

i think that there are very few people who can master the quattro driving style

it should be easy to talk words saying " any other car will faster ,funnier and more competitive than your old S2 Coupe..." of course it is right if you buy a new Mitsubishi EVO 9 for 50K€ + more $$$ in extras or not??

could be compared a 1500kg EVO with a 1500kg S2 Coupe?? or are they a complete different worlds???

The evo is a track ready car and handles really well out of the box.

I agree with both Alex and Andy.

These are something different, but if you want it to become a race car it's going to cost you alot of time, money and hard work.

The question as it is asked is a bit silly as well.
You should have a certain budget and then ask "what is the best track car I can get for this budget?".

I would get me one of these, if I needed a street-legal track car:

the cheapest car and also the only car that is the basic model, also the heaviest, yet it still has fastest 0-30, 0-60 and almost 0-90, also has the 1/4 mile... kind of a shock.

Surely the point of turning an S2 in to a track car is a not what it's about... The heritage of these cars is Rally and not road/track...

And I would put money on it - that any one of the cars Rocco mentions if taken off track and put on to a rally circuit would fail miserably... An S2 would win hands down...

It's like comparing Chalk & Cheese...

Erm, you might want to look at Audi's racing history... 200 TransAm, IMSA 90q, V8 DTM, 80 competition, A4 quattro BTCC and numerous LMS cars... no works rallying since '86 and plenty of track stuff before the S2 was ever built And a lot since too!

Alas none of those cars share alot with a S2 though Andy. And the IMSA did not even use the quattro system.

I never said it did, Ken was talking about heritage and I was merely pointing out that he'd missed out a rather large chunk of it

Neither is an S2 particularly related to the quattro rally cars, the Evo and S1 rally cars share about as much with a quattro or S2 as the 90q, 200 etc. do.
