I think the sheet above shows that the s2 will be competitive against it's peers, the M3 and the 190 EVO; however unless you invest heavily it'll never be competitive with a lighter more powerful and track prepped car. Assuming the drivers are similar in experience etc it's just down to physics.

The point of taking the car to the track is to have a competition with yourself. To see if you can feel and understand the car and get the best performance you can from it consistently. It doesn't matter if you bring an ESTfield (), a fiesta, a golf TDI, a fighter jet with wheels or an S2, the driver still faces the same challenge.

If you want a track s2 to destroy and embarass every other car I think you have to copy terrybullwon's car or something like that.

            Hi David!
Happy new year to you man!

Yes I was with him at dinner in my area, he's now the first honorary member of our Club no need to say it's a big honor for us rather then him
As always I must say once again he's a grand person in every possible way.
The way he deals with the fans like us it's simply delicious and the humility of such a champion can put you off....

I`d say the type of track also plays a role. A tight and twisty track isn`t what a 4wd car wants. If it`s a high speed track with wide corners, it`s anyones guess.

I`ve raced against some EVO`s, Impreza`s, Golf`s, Skyline`s, BMW`s and so forth, pretty much all the brands mentioned. I must say that in most cases it all boils down to power. If you have enough power, you can beat pretty much anyone ( assuming you have a fairly sorted chassis ). On the other hand, I`ve raced against an Evo 7 prepared by the wizards at Scuderia Japan, I had 50bhp more than him, and he smooooooooked me to say the least
Now you see me, now you don`t

i only want to know if the S2 Coupe is it really a bad track car as the most of spanish people thinks if we compared it with other different cars as i have said

i never did my 100% in a trackday because i dont want to lose my car forever in a second or run useless risks with it.... so i cant tell a perfect opinion of it

but in the right and expert hands.... could be FAST¡¡

I could bet he used the same words!

                        Stefano

I guess the basics are the same for legends and us mere mortals, it's the additional 99.9% that one could spend a lifetime chasing and never get anywhere close.

Following on from my statement - on a really basic level, adding the silly RARB that I did. made direction change during cornering easier, a stiffer RARB is a must on an S2 IMO.

For a track car, by reducing mass, improving roll stiffness and shifting the balance of grip forwards, you'll have a car that will be unrecognisable to a stock S2 driver, i.e. much more agile! It'll still be utterly brutal in its execution though and that's the fun part!

Many non quattro owners who I've taken out on a trackday lap or two have commented on how early I can get on the throttle and the high corner exit speed that results. With grippier tyres you can lean on the front grip more, without understeer, and that in turn helps to swing the back around a little to get the car hooked up on a nice tight line.

On road tyres, the car will get to some faily entertaining angles and is controllable in a lift-off oversteer state or when trail braking into a corner, not textbook racecraft by any stretch but then the S2 is not really a textbook car... When the car is on the right path you can then get back on the power reasonably hard and, in a standard turbo car at least, the quattro system snaps the car on line and the power understeer can then be managed, providing the front inner wheel doesn't spin up! Interestingly, the stiff RARB has almost removed power understeer, providing you're not being daft...

Interesting to note that the suspension design means that under acceleration, the front goes toe out and the rear toe in, this makes the rear more stable and the front pointier, this won't help the understeer too much under power, under braking the opposite is true, rear suspension goes to toe out and so the back is more mobile than during power on but the front is more stable... I've been caught out by this on occasion when I've missed a braking point and gone into a corner a bit hot, the car will generally oversteer in rather than the expected quattro understeer. Of course, silly entry speed will result in heading directly to the scene of the incident.

There's also the camber issue with MacPherson strut when going too low, better to run at a more OE rideheight and maintain correct suspension geometry really but with stiffer springs you can start to run lower, I'm sure this could be calculated easily, given some estimated cornering loads on the springs and resulting rideheight.

Finally, if you can ditch the ARBs and use stiffer springs then you should improve grip too, ARBs are a good way of balancing a softly sprung road setup but some proper stiff springs will mean that their effect becomes minimal and ultimately, they remove grip from an axle by trying to lift the unloaded wheel - just look at any rallying mk.2 Escort if you want to see this in action on the front axle!

I would add to Rusty's chassis advice list to throw on a rear strut brace, the rear towers can flex in quite a bit. When I fitted a rear strut brace I did so with the car in the air supported by the body, with the car on the ground and supported by the wheels/suspension the bar could not be refitted as the struts had flexed in enough that the bolt holes did not line up, I did not measure the distance unfortunately.

During a track session in the rain I was instructed to trail brake the s2 into corners, made a huge difference to how fast I could take the hairpin, my previous 45* approach was fun but not as fast.

Was there not a guy who ran a s2 coupe in a series dominated by evos down south recently?

wich type of FARB/ RARB are you using in your coupe?? the RS2 one?? custom?

KW variant 3 will be a nice option for the people who likes to stay changing suspension setups for street and trackdays true?

Hi all and happy new year !
                              What an interesting thread !!
I used to go on trackday on my polo G40 (150hp and 830 kg) not the same as S2
Since I bought my S2, I 'm looking for some advises about "how to drive a quattro"
I can't find a lot of answer about driving this car ...
Sometimes I try to drive hard to discover quattro philosophy but almost every time, it goes understeer and make me feel unsafe
The only things I have understand for now is the very powerfull abilities to get out of a corner

I'm reading your posts like a "quattro bible" please continue
