Likelyhood of finding a sedan? (LHD)

How often does one of the 300 or so S2 sedans come up for sale?

Obviously talking LHD - not after the single RHD!

Failing that... what's the consensus on the best donor sedan to mash together with my coupe? Just a regular 80 sedan?

(I've looked at a few S2/RS2 sedan threads on here already - it's not that I can't find the search button, I'm just asking for general consensus as well )

Id say you'd definately have to start with a quattro saloon, save you a lot of messing about at the rear.

Most people use V6 quattro saloons as there the easiest to come by. But the easiest to do the conversion on i would say is a 16v quattro saloon. There not common but the engine mounts etc for the I5 will be in the right place (engine mounts will need modifying on v6)

You want an Avant as a donor car for a B4 saloon. The B3 shares a lot more in common with the Coupe but the B3 arches do limit the size of wheels that can be run and have the B3 front end, rather than the updated / S2 style B4.

What are the things I need from the avant that can't be found on the coupe and aren't already on the B4 saloon quattro?

Beefier driveshafts on the B4 Avant and of course the 5-bolt hubs are required for a proper conversion... other than things like specific springs and dampers the rear of B4Q 16V saloon will be otherwise be identical to S2 Avant.

hah, yeah, I heard about that.

All this will be happening when I've moved to Germany and have a garage to **** around in (hence why I want LHD now).

Looks like first step when I have that space will be to find a B4Q 16V with an emphasis on a good condition chasis and body.

Avant/Saloon chassis is totally different from the gearbox back (including prop, diff, ARB etc.). The interior is also different saloon to coupe and exhaust too (if you swap it over to save £). Get an upgraded RARB on there, along with the B5 style brace bars.

Ideally you want lightly damaged Avant donor and can then swap it all over. Avant springs will be fine, although they're a different Audi part no, the Saloon ones are more than likely a smidge softer so sticking on Avant ones might cause a little increased ridfeheight but will do the handling some favours.

My plan is to get some space I can dedicate to the project and then over the next couple of years (as and when time and funds allow), anally build up a mint RS2+ Saloon.

Yes, I am aware that this is the end of my bank balance.

Edit: Thanks Rusty. Looks like I need a damaged avant with good engine, gearbox, propshaft, diff, etc... be a bonus if it comes with decent interior.

Springs + dampers, ARBs and exhaust are are potential upgrade items anyway, so I wasn't too fussed there. I'm planning more of an upgraded conversion rather than a straight move-over.

TBH, if it's a road car then you can just swap the lot over pretty much FOC, upgrade the worn out bushes and then upgrade things once you've had time to drive it and take stock. Only other thing I'd upgrade would be dampers, as they'll be aincient, unless you get lucky. A stock sprung car on upgraded dampers and larger RARB drives quite nicely on the road and the roll isn't that bad on track TBH. If you're lucky, I'll have my K24R sports springs around for some added body control sooner rather than later
