    Keevil Airfield Day

Just got back from a half day at Keevil with Motorsport Events.

Following some last minute cooling system alterations, the old girl had a couple of teething problems, the first being a minor water leak, which was easily fixed by rotating and tightening a clip, the second being a loss of oil, more than likely from the rear of the rocker cover gasket, and that will require some investigation.

Brakes were fine, lasting about 4 flat out laps before fading and requiring only a small amount of cooling to be back on form. I think that some more aggressive discs would help a little there but they're 314mm and designed to fit under stock wheels, so they do pretty well IMHO, based on that.

Anyway, it's a fast 'circuit' and so 300bhp came in useful. There are no less than 3 100mph+ to 40mph- stops in the lap, my highest speed being 115 indicated into a 40mph corner! The other corners are a 90-60 before a chicane and a deep breath 80-90mph entry beast

Overall, the old girl did well, especially considering it's on stock road tyres. She ate standard elises and caterhams for breakfast The tastier stuff was naturally faster but of the saloon and hot hatches there, few were faster and none by much. There were 2 B5 S4s there, one a K03 road/track car and the other a K04 slick shod racer, neither had much on the S2 that couldn't be explained by a passenger, full tank of petrol and intact leather interior Happy days.

Handling wise, the dreaded Audi understeer was there, in the tight corners especially, and this took careful grip management. I'd forgotten the extent to which the track tyres had improved things at ADI in October! Hopefully some new top mounts (eventually) and subnframe bushes will sort things out there w.r.t castor and camber.

Overall, a great value afternoon at £65 and one that will take a little time to get over but well worth it

LSD in the rear would make thigs worse. Too much grip and too little power for a slippy diff to get things sideways.

No pics, I was too busy. Did take a video but it's just a car going round a track...

Having driven my BM on track a few times, the LSD works well when the car is loaded but when going round slower corners (where I was having issues), it can push the front wide, as the rear wheels have more grip than the front and there isn't the power to overwhelm them. Without trying it in the Audi, I can only use this experience as a guide and as rear traction has never been a problem in slower corners, and front traction is, I can't see it solving the issues I have in slower corners. I'll happily take a passenger ride to prove me wrong though

Anyway, here's the video. As you'll see, the track is simple but effective, has 3 proper 100-40mph stops in it (enough to test the sturdiest of road car brake setups) and one corner that requires a rather deep breath! I prefered Hullavington in the BM but am yet to try it in the S2, not done Abingdon or Colerne (the other 2 local airfields) and want to get over to Pembrey, as it's supposed to be a lot of fun (MSE Venues). I like using them as they're good VFM, will do a 1/2 day and are relaxed and easy to deal with, as well as mainly attracting people who are there to have a good day and not be a complete d1ck.

I think the lap is there with 6k5 in 4th after the fast right (115 indicated ~110 actual), that was top speed during the day and is followed by a 40mph left. It took quite a few goes to get the speed through the fast corner.

In my experience it has had a big effect on the tendancy to plough straight on with the inside wheels scrabbling, as long as you're sensible on the throttle the front tucks in nicely
Looks like a fun day out, need to watch it with decent sound

Looks like good fun, not used to seeing blue dials in an S2. Good value for money as well.
