    Real world mpg, 1.8 20v vs 1.8 20v turbo

Hi, I know this is mainly an S2 forum but hopefully someone will know the answer to this query..

I'm looking to flog the thirsty 2.6 v6E and buy a 1.8 20v or 1.8 20v turbo A4 avant (diesels are too expensive). Which one has the best real world mpg though, as auto trader reckons they're both the same even though the turbo should theoretically be juicier.....

My 1.8t averages around 27.5mpg, hardly any motorway driving and mostly short journeys. I had a 1.8 na too, that did a little better at around 29mpg also no motorway driving. to be honest i would never buy a 1.8 20v engine again as both mine have been shockingly un reliable. on the other hand is my 1.4 16v polo which is as fast as the 1.8t sport, more economical by 6-7mpg and a cracking little car.

Hmm, think I may be loosing my faith in post 1998 VAG motors then! The 1.6's chew up gearboxes, 1.8's are troublesome, tdi's are a bit over priced, and anything above a 2.0 will cost too much to run. May just stick with the good old B4's. If I can find one!!

Do not get a 1.8 20v, worst engine i've ever had the misfortune to experience (even some vauxhalls are better)

On a mega long run to scarborough from swindon I struggled to get above the 10 mpg taking it easy, vag com checked out, new lambda probe etc.

After this the engine decided to kill half the ecu so it was running on around 3 cylinders (sounded like a scooby)

car was a pita so sorted the ecu, new mot and flogged it on. Won't buy another again.

Its wierd the 1.8t is completely different and a lot better and i've heard its brilliant on fuel compared to the n/a

Had a remapped 1.8t in a Golf (lighter car I know) and it averaged 32mpg. Used to see 28 around town.

I had a 1.8Tq sport avant (180hp) and I'd average 27-29mpg, mixture of m'way and around town. Best I ever got on a long run was 32. I reckoned it was a bit thirsty for the performance you get back. Was a great car though, 100% reliable for 3 years (unlike others it seems) and handling was superb.

                          1.8t Q SE (163bhp)

Get about 35mpg on long runs, although on one occaision I managed to get 37mpg. Short runs will be more like 25-29mpg. We have had no problems with the 1.8t (which we have owned since last year) and I know they are supposed to be super reliable. I like the torque at low revs, although they do tend to run out of steam a bit at the top end (although I am comparing it against my RS2!)
