    Ignition problems 80 1.8 JN

    I got a type 89 80 1.8 engine code JN, it's a multipoint KE-Jetronic, anyway I believe it's a KE.

I drove it for a couple of months untill it started to eat rotors, it had new rotor, distributor cap and spark plugs and now I've changed the spark cables aswell. The first rotor was melted at the tip. Changed the coil now aswell but it all makes no difference.
It runs on 2 cylinders or maybe even less than that. All 4 spark plugs become wet within 30 seconds running the engine.
Had a look at earth wires under the hood but have to look at the ones under the fuse box still.
Would it be the distributor itsself that's fubared or does it have some sort of ECU that could cause this?

Hope someone can help me with this.

Whether its Bosch K or KE Jetronic fuelling is irrelevant here but quick FYI - K has a mechanical linkage by means of air flap that controls the fuelling whereas KE has an electrical air flow meter (essentially a variable resistor, not a fancy MAF like on S2 etc). There were some other electrical sensors as well. Need to hit the books to remind my poor tired brain.

Anyway - there is no ECU as such on these old cars for ignition timing - but there is a 'TCI' unit which forms part of the coil circuitry - am going into deep memory here from a KV engine - this has some old school circuit to adjust dwell & advance on the spark timing at the dissy. Cannot remember if there is vacuum advance on those dissys. The TCI module should be in the front auxiliary relay panel.

Are you sure the coil is healthy and that the dissy gears are good and that timing belt is lined up good ?

Will look see if I have a schematic for the JN motor

Haynes book 1491 covers it well enough. JN motor is TCI alright - Transistorised Coil Ignition... Timing is controlled by weights and vacuum unit in the dissy.

the ignition in audi; the tci coil, does NOT want wrong leads... so i think you have to check out this; does the coil have 12 v to connektor?? the fusebox may ahve been nearly dead, the elektric switch( behind the steeringcolomn and key).. the earth to the ground...(!!!!) the transistor may been nearly dead..( the dizzi with 7 pin connecktor) and the hallswitch in the cables are on... have you new cables with the big OHM resistans..

well, it ran on the leads the car came with and it was running alright with it, but then all of a sudden it was wrong.

Ordered another distributor, hopefully that will cure it. Need to get it out of the garden cause there might be another car entering soon.
