I'm going to try out VAGcom on the shareware version and wanted some advice on an interface that works - anyone got any pointers?

In my experience get an rs232 cable and use a proper com port (rare on a laptop these days) or a DECENT usb rs232 converter. I have had bad experiences using usb vagcom cables especially when connecting to CCU's, Imobos, and air bag contolers.
My rs232 vagcom cable is a cheap ebay job and works a great. Ill try and get the sellers info for you.

go as cheap as you like on the interface it's the com port that needs to be spot on.

I've got this one which is complete over-kill but It's for non car work purposes also.
Speak to Jamo about the easy-sync gear.
Much cheaper and almost as good so I'm led to believe.
Just don't go usb.

ok I bought a serial --> USB adapter (decent one I believed )
I also bought a generic OBD2 to serial cable off ebay and still can't get anything to play
This is pissing me off now!
All i get is the COM Port Status OK
Interface status: 3 - Not found or not ready
Com port is right, cable plugged in, ignition on... WTF?
I did read something about some laptops not pushing enough power through the USB to work OBD2, could this be the problem?

Looks like a decent converter to me.
If you give the interface 12volts it should come up "OK"

Which pin do I need to light up with 12v to test the cable?

when i had a dabble with vag com i had to do something in the control panel with the com ports to make it use the right one. I used a usb jobby off ebay and it worked ok. Wish i could remember what i did. I was on an xp laptop.Comment

If the usb converter is signed onto a com port value higher than 4 vagcom can't use it.
You can change the com port value in device manager.sigpic
