    running with faulty coilpack

will it do any damage? I was concerned about damaging the cats if theres loads of unburnt fuel going down the exhaust becasue of a misfire off dodgy coilpacks, will it do any harm to drive a few miles with them playing up?

Unplug the injector on that cylinder otherwise unburned fuel will give you bore wash or kill your cats .

not sure which one it is at the moment! waiting for my OBD > serial cable to show up... its a sporadic misfire, only does it under heavy load so not a constant issue...Just don't want to break Helen's new car
I only need to drive about 20 miles before its going to the local stealer on Saturday where fingers crossed there will be 8 shiney new coilpacks going on for free

I'll wait till my cable shows up and see which ones playing up and unplug the injector.

If whatever you have with 8 cylinders is anything like an AAN or ABY, there are ZERO fault codes for a misfiring coil. NONE, NADA. Hence the joy of tracking it down. If they only misfire under load, you need to test each coil for strength the old fashioned spark jump way. If the miss progresses so the coil is missing at idle, you can track it down by pulling injector connections (one by one, replacing after each test). The failing coil is the on the cylinder that doesn't make the idle worse when you pull the injector.

            This procedure is outlined here:

Only misfires under load, idle is fine - Its a B6 so they have more "intelligent" coils and will throw codes

AFAIK its only 2001 + Bo but your local dealer will tell you for sure from your VIN

Well, do find that out. I had an UrS4 in once where #3 plug had come loose, roasted the coilpack, and dropped the detritus into the engine.

The newer ECU's have some really cool logging functions, check out this section, http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/m_blocks/010-019.html

Or for the knock control http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/m_blocks/020-029.html

Using those on a 1.8t told me plain as day cyl 2 and 4 had died.
