    Making your own E85

Looking for info on this, where I live at the present there is no source of e85 and 98 is now 1.48l, I can source ethanol alcohol etilco 99.9% and cloruro benzalconio 0.1% rated 96%

I can get this for 60 cents a litre is it suitable or can someone give me a little lesion on alcohol for fuel ?

    Thanks

Is there any spec to the ethanol that you should use or not ? this is sanitary quality more expensive, 60cent l there are other that have used products to purify them but still ethanol but do not know much about the subject

I can source the sanitary quality easily

I would think that should be OK and fairly easy: just mix the ethanol that you source with the cheapest pump petrol you can find.
Then decide if you want, E98, E85, E75, etc.
Ethanol is such a superior fuel (performance wise) that it boggles the mind.

Ethanol isn't that superior in a few key ways... firstly its has a hell of a lot less calorific content than good old petrol - i.e. it has less energy to give per unit of volume.

Also, its bloody hard to make ethanol ignite when its cold for a load of reasons that are covered in GCSE chemistry.

But, if you're running a **** load of boost, its great because the effective octane rating is much higher compared to petrol!

What do you use to monitor the quality of your e85 ? something like the zeitronix ?

Indeed, that is why I said performance wise, implying high performance.
Cold start and higher consumption are drawbacks, but at todays price, 98 octane is approx 60% more expensive per liter, and 20% more expensive to run when we take the 30% added consumption of E85 into account. However, a high compression engine built for specific E85 use would lower the difference in consumption.

A switch on the cold start injector on my Golf makes it start at -15C without issues.

Much higher octane (effective octane 115+) and extreme cooling effect: E85 at 20C has the cooling effect of petrol at approx -60C.
More exhaust volume for quicker spool and 50-100C lower EGTs are added bonuses.
The fact that E85 gives 5-20% more torque/power at the same boost/timing and more with tuning makes petrol seem rather poor in comparison as a fuel for forced induction.

Ok, the question is: is any ethanol good enough for the engine? I was reading somewhere that there is a process to remove water from ethanol and stuff like that.

If you look at the OP's location, I am pretty sure he will not have any cold starting issues

Jade, keep in mind, you will need bigger injectors, possibly fuel pump and a full remap.
You will make lots more power though if it's mapped correctly.

                      Thanks

Yes changing to 1100cc @ 3.5 bar I run a 4bar regulator, I already run a 044 and oversized fuel lines I have a second pump kicking about if necessary

Running on Vems so a remap should not be to much of a problem

So as soon as I have the injectors, I will do the swap to Ethanol
