Should the relay not energize the pump when you turn the key and before you crank the engine?
Crank and cam position sensors required ASAP.

No. With the Motronic ECU the fuel pump relay is only energized when the ECU receives a signal from the G28 engine speed sensor (counts the teeth on the flywheel ring gear) and that the signal => 13 RPM. Paul has confirmed this on the bench.

its not a quick or easy job - thats for sure... and its not one for the driveway either - you need height on a ramp for good access to the bolts and a gearbox stand to support it as you extract it. Many bellhousing bolts are location specific too so you need to be organised for a hassle free rebuild in that screwing in a longer bolt of same thread to a short hole can crack the casing if sufficient care is not observed. Its not technically complex but fairly physical grunt for two blokes for half a day I would say.
Some folk like to extract the gearbox alone - some prefer it to come out attached to the subframe - sometimes you wont have a choice if certain things are seized up solid.
I am trying to remember if there is a cover plate at bottom of gearbox which would give a chance to peer / poke in with a magnastick and extract the missing flywheel pin.Paul Nugent

I personally feel that causes more problems doing it that way.
The engines IMO are best left in place and just pull the gearbox out from underneath, I've done one on axle stands and never again
Removing the gearbox is just time consuming but there is little to go wrong or break ( except your back ) removing the engine and tampering with old wiring can lead to faults, removing boost hoses and other parts can lead to other potential problems, plus obviously you are bound to find things you would then rather sort out before the engine goes back in so it then becomes a resto job, not a flywheel change
