    Run in reverse?

    Just a thought guys????

Is it all possible to run an I5 20v engine in reverse ie counter clockwise instead of clockwise.

The starter can be altered with not too much problem, I can't see why any of the other sensors would have any type of issue.

I just can't work out in my head what or how you would position the cams correctly
Would you just set them 180 so the timing marks are on the outside instead of the inside?

    Any ideas?

You would possibly need to turn the pistons round as the pin is slightly offset ,its known as thrust offset and is there to reduce piston slap.
As for the cams , I've just got in from a heavy night :mischeif: and I need to got to bed, will give it some thought tomorrow/ later.

The oil pump would not as the gear would be going the wrong way
never set your expectations to high that way you are never disapointed

Don't think the water pump would work great either, cams usually have a lifting ramp built into the profile to take up the slack and gradually start the valve moving, also the belt tensioners would be on the tight side of the belts.

so is this going to be rear engined?if so i would have thought using a porsche setup will be less hassle than reversing the way an engine runs.Post 1997 porsche gearboxes fit audi 5 pot with only a little modification

yes this is all true, it is obviously possible but likely a lot of work, just one question I have, what do you have in mind with this with regards to why ? I presuming you are going to hook it to a gearbox/car set up that requires it to run in that direction but what would that be ?

Why not just run mid-engined? Or are you wanting keep quattro of some description?

Myself and a friend were throwing a few ideas around this weekend with making a rear engined buggy but using all the quattro running gear.

obviously if you spin everything around you would have 5/6 reverse gears and only 1 forward gear, so I asked the question to see if it's possible to run an I5 backwards to reverse the gearing, as this is what some marine engines do.

However I have posted on a few forums and it looks like there is other ways of doing it.

Ie the R8 gearbox has a remote drive to the front diff which would work. It looks like some of the VW syncro stuff may do the job, it was only a hyperthetical question at the min....

knowing you it won't be hypothetical for very long.
I expect you will have started building this buggy by tea time.

I saw this thread earlier and was hypothesising what Tonks had planned.

Would it not be less hassle to flip the gearbox and diff upside down and make the drain a breather and breather a drain? Or would the oil just sit in empty space in the gearbox?

I did think about that but the diff would be elevated out of the oil and the half shafts would be to high and you would need to make an adapter plate to bolt to the engine

Could the Porsche running gear be used with adaptor plate? Or the Porsche engines allready run in reverse compared to 2.2T ?
