I once bought a Merc 1981 300 GD swb for 2500 Euros so perhaps you can find one too. I only ever sold it coz I needed the cash. One of the best cars I've ever owned
Sorry for the Land Rover lovers ( two of my friends had Defender 90's so I can really compare ) but the G-Class is really superior with it's fully lockable 3 diffs. 5* on and off road, no joking, it's awesome on tarmac curves and the diesel engines are built to last forever with only small, easy maintenenace to have to deal with.
It only gets let down in really swampy conditions or dense woods with trees to contend with as it's toughness and heavy duty engineering let it down in two, agreed crucial aspects, namely weight and size.
Thanks for the replies. I like shoguns and landcrusiers but hold there money well. Disco might be the answer if cheap.
As for a car what are allroads like in say snow etc.

just a quick note on td5's they will need to be plugged into a laptop after touching things like injectors and half shaft are made of chocolate we can brake one every week if your not careful (That is off roading though). A good 300tdi with a better intercooler and pump fiddled with are pretty bomb proof. They are easy to work on ( half shafts can be done in an hour or less the more you do). parts are very cheep and easy to find. Landcruiser's have better diffs and half shafts and they seem to be built better but they will cost more. Parts are more expensive too.
If you go for a disco check the rear floor as they can be very bad i'v seen really clean well looked after models have no rear floor up to the back seats. models with rear sun roofs seem to be worst affected.
Don t have a td5 disco!
I m regretting it ( had a 300 tdi before and want it back)
Bills in the last 2 years since buying it
Purchase £2500 ( below market value as previous owner had tried to fix sunroof leaks n destroyed the headlining
Alternator with fitting £300 ish
Front hubs as the abs sensors couldn t pick up a reading, plus all new discs n pads £400
Headgasket went but the AA said it was the rad cap! So I changed it n carried on, 2 days later did a sniff test n head was gone, big cracks n stupid plastic dowels!
Recon head plus fitting etc £1800
Front springs n shocks £350
Rear watts linkage bushes etc£300
Rear ace pipes corroded £300 with labour
and now the ace valveblock is knackered, tried 2 sets of seals and still leaks, so 2nd hand one @£100
Apart from that its a great car, 35ish mpg on motorway @80mph
Very comfy, great for towing and safe family car
But I wouldn t have another!
300tdi can be tuned easily but rusts like hell ( and annoying door locks that are made of something softer than chocolate, i broke 3)
and the prices are going up too
Buy a Land Cruiser dude
but I forgot to mention, first owner of mine was related to Queen Mother!
Its got a gromment in the middle of the bonnet where the flag mounting went!
Doubt it would add to the ebay value tho, lol
