Sorry for the Land Rover lovers ( two of my friends had Defender 90's so I can really compare ) but the G-Class is really superior with it's fully lockable 3 diffs. 5* on and off road, no joking, it's awesome on tarmac curves and the diesel engines are built to last forever with only small, easy maintenenace to have to deal with.

It only gets let down in really swampy conditions or dense woods with trees to contend with as it's toughness and heavy duty engineering let it down in two, agreed crucial aspects, namely weight and size.
the old merc gallander wagons are absolute bullet proof my dad had 2 till recently had a 280GE old Y reg from new cost a fortune to maintain - age related! and a 290GD both long wheel based and very under powered but stunning and so rare!

Id stay away from discos they look good but you have to get it AA inspected I bought one from a decent garage and returned it a week later it was shiite and needed £2k of work so in the end bought something decent.

To fit within your budget it HAS to be a Rangie p38 4.6L with a full stainless steel exhaust blooody AWESOME and 12 mpg

G Wagons are UGGGGGLLLLLY! YUK! Awesome offroad though, very good articulation.

ACE units on the Disco 2 are a pain in the **** granted, but just remove it (It is a good bit of kit though if you like off roading)

Try to get one with no sunroofs if you can, or get new seals for them.

ABS sensors come with wheel bearings, but you can also just change the sensors, sometimes people are ripped of by being told they need a bearing to replace a sensor...

As for Allroads, I think they are supposed to be OK but the air suspension and suspension in general costs A LOT. Same for brakes etc.

When have you ever seen a real good looking 4x4? (I count Q7 as an MPV not 4x4)

You think the Q7 looks good?! WOW! Should have gone to specsavers!

OK, Ranage Rover (original and L322) L322 is THE best looking 4x4xfar - in fact, it is one of THE best looking cars available today, although not too keen on the blingness of the 2010 model.

          Defenders look awesome

Proper off road Disco 1, 1.5s and 2s look great

          Unimog

          Porsche Cayene...

OK Im busting your balls, the Porsche is worse than a Q7/5/X3/X5/X6....

Q7, porsche, touareg same car really, different badge and engine (and suspension in the porsches case) dont even go there with the bmw!

I think the Q7 is better looking than ant range rover, disco, mitsy or toyoya aver built.!

Unimog totaly the best ever and then defender but they aint exactly pretty, i agree they look good but from a capability and engineering point of view, which in turn makes the G wagon look good.

Try getting a good defender or unimog for that budget!

Nissan patrol, Hilux surf 3.0td or pajero best bang for buck in that price range!
Probably the longet S2 project in history EVER!

X trail any good? Looking for better mpg over offroad. As long as the 4x4 system works well and ground clearance.

I had a 3.1 td it was a great work horse and ok off road the truck took some serious stick it never let me down once. It towed 3 ton around 5 days a week for 2 years.

Sorry strongly disagree!! The RR and RR sport are the best looking and most capable 4x4 available in todays market a million times better than Q7 and bmw X5 even though they not bad and the new style porsche cayanne diesel does an average 40 mpg beat that for a 4x4!!
