    Gearbox

Anyone fancy helping me to remove the gearbox on my ABY Avant. I am in Shrewsbury and have a covered hangar and access to a ramp. I am in Shawbury near Shrewsbury.

    Cheers

    Si
You might leave the S2 fold every so often - but you'll always come back!

If I was closer to you it would have been a pleasure, thank goodness I don't live near you
Hope you don't mind me raising a question, Just removed same from car the other day BUT I left the engine in situ is it better to remove the whole front subframe with engine in situ??

Ive removed the gearbox from my ABY recently to replace the clutch. I found it such a pain to get the gearbox mated back to the engine whilst the car was just on axle stands that ive given up and decided to remove the engine and put the engine and gearbox back in as one (how i did it last time) theres no such thing as a shortcut, lol! I think it would be much easier with a ramp/lift though...

I sort of thought it would be a pain to get back in because of fouling the steering track rods but I've not done it enough to see the best way yet. Wonder if it would less time and effort in the long run to remove it all. Anyone else?

Sod removing the engine, the 6 speed goes back in but it is awkward.

From memory although it was a while back now

          Farb and subframe off
          Downpipe and exhaust off
          Shafts out and prop
Possibly steering arms and tie them up
          Unplug wiring connectors off gearbox
          Remove slave cylinder flexi pipe

We used a big jack with a piece of strong wood to lift it back in then one if us on each side to lift it off the jack and onto the engine.

Don't forget some copper slip on the input shaft and you may need to put a jack under the front of the engine to stop it tilting forward once the box is off, tilt the engine back slightly to help get the box back on but be careful of the crank pulley against the ic.

We did it on axle stands, not easy but managed it in half a day I'd say

You will want a big jack

Was/is the clutch plate aleigned properly that would stop the G/box going on? If steering rods were out the way I think it would be the best way.

I am thinking engine out too, the big bonus is that the car club has a ramp and I have a permanent slot in the hangar too - thankfully! I am thinking mini resto will probably a good few months off the road.
If anyone can help I don't expect them to do it for free.
