1/4 mile drag, diff lock on or off???

if you were running a 1/4 mile drag and you had disconnected your speed limiter on the diff lock, would you run the whole 1/4 with the diff locked or not?

which option would you expect to finish in the quicker time?? (if at all)

No idea what the big power boys do, but for my RS2+ setup, I find using the diff lock on a full-bore launch makes the back too squirmy - i.e. it fish-tails around and wastes time and effort tring to keep it in a staight line.

For drag racing you want about 10% wheel spin, but using the diff lock on full power means that you will get far too much wheel spin.

Just my 2 penneth - someone will be along any minute to say the exact opposite

    Cheers n

ive been thinking about it and i can see pros and cons to both side of the debate, i just have a gut feeling that locked diff will be better especially to the experienced driver

i will test it on 10th july, when im back at york raceway for attempt 2 on the drag strip after a tune up, see if i can see any changes in my times :-D

I tested this with my UrS6, stock with Prj's chip and launch control. It seems that the diff lock helped a bit on the 60ft times (around 0.05s) but the times were improving constantly (I did 5 launches with diff lock off and 4 with diff lock on), so it's hard to say if it was because the diff lock or something else.

Depends on power. For a stock car, if you get the clutch right, it won't spin on dry tarmac; merely a chirp and you're off

@Rusty & Co - thought you would be queuing up for VLC - variable launch control... that'll get your juices flowing on the drag strip !

75 quid fitted to AAN, ABY, ADU plus postage of ecu back to you. If REILLY can get some with and without times at the strip then that'll be all the more evidence. Roll up !!!!

              ummmm.

i run it locked full time, and have the Torsen center diff welded as well.

and i dont have squirmy booty syndrome.

on the launch, i hold on one handed... one hand on wheel and one on shifter. and the car runs straight as an arrow...

                  Reilly,

When I tried mine locked on snowy roads the back end did try and come around. Took off much better/cleaner with the diff lock off. May not be relevant to your use on a drag strip, but just posted for feedback.

I presume if I was stuck in deep snow the diff lock would have be advantageous, but as for a fast take off on a snowy road it was better without the diff locked.

                  It's an S2 Avant.

                  HTH a bit.

I will do it after you get remapped by Automark or whomever... There are hardware mods on the ECU as well to prevent anyone from trying to copy the feature. Only dmitri and I are doing this. I would turn it round in 48hrs if I knew when it was arriving.

                    Cheers
