And the fuel pumps like to go as well.

Pre-2003 (and even then, the engine code has to be checked) ALL have camshaft problems.
The 3.3 V8 TDI on the A8 has exactly the same problem as well.

2.5 TDI is crap. Not stellar fuel economy, not much power, and loads of problems.
Better save up a little and buy something with 3.0 TDI V6 (but even there, there is issues with the chain tensioners).

Basically, if you want to actually save on running costs, buy a V6 petrol engine. It will be much cheaper for you in the long run than buying a used early-year 2.5 TDI.
It's only early stages in the reply’s to this thread and its Sunday which means afternoon beer to wash down the dinner so hang fire on the reply’s coming in with bad reports or experiences with the 2.5tdi engined cars, only people who have had first hand or who know of bad experiences with these engines will post a reply with their problems and recommendations. Not wanting to jump down your throat but I really do disagree with the V6 tdi being crap, We have 3 of these engined cars in our family and they have been owned from early stages, one of them now has over 170K on the clock with only the usual requiring replacing (filters, belts and oil) I have not owned one personally but have used many a car fitted with this engine plus I have a few friends and one in the motor building industry who own(s) A4's, A6’s and Allroads with the mentioned engine and all of them have said that it does lack power but it is an absolute cracker of an engine and nothing to report in ways of camshaft wear resulting in replacement. Granted that any engine will develop faults with poor maintenance and bad repair but as we all know Audi diesel engines given regular servicing with genuine and good quality parts by a reputable garage and by individuals who know their way around these engines will last forever.

Yeah, the problem does not exist, that's why Audi has made updated camshafts available and re-designed them for 2003 MY.

        Whatever.

firend of mine sold his 1999 passat for a 2.5tdi quattro 180 auto, nice car but MPG was terrible so he got shot after only 6 weeks, he was very dissapointed in it to be frank.

I think his journey on M4 J5 to M4 J11 he was getting roughly 28-30 MPG at 70/80mph. He had it checked out by Audi who assured him nothing was wrong.

He regrets selling his 1.9tdi passat

In what sentence did I say the camshaft wear does not exist? I clearly stated that family and friends who own these engines have had no problems with camshaft wear. The point of this thread is all about posting your experiences with owning or using V6 tdi engined cars for K7ERG. So hence my postings on this thread. It was not case of saying you are not true at all..

Good or bad comments welcome....... after all in my budget I think the only quattro A6 is the 2.5 v6 tdi. I have a 1.9 tdi a4 but its a basic model and fwd. Also the main reason for going A6 is the room inside.

If I could find a A6 with ael in quattro that would be ideal.

I know but I would have to sell my car to help fund which takes time. I was going to trade my car in against on from garage.

Try selling it, you never know it may go straight away. The older Audi's (prior to the A4's etc) just seem to be screwed together better IMHO.

I will 2nd that. Both my old A6 quattro and urs4 are miles better than the A4 I have at the moment.

I had a 2001 a4 2.5tdi AKN engine, had done 226000 miles when i scrapped it, due to clutch/flywheel failure and needing work for mot. There was visible wear to the cams and followers, you could put your finger down the oil fill cap and feel the groove on the visible lobe, and it was very noisy at times. I averaged about 40mpg, but was only fwd.

Personally i didnt feel robbed at 225000, and it may have done more, but cam wear is certainly an issue on this vintage of v6, just read paul s2centrals thread for experience on cam failure.
