I only use 5w40 fully synthetic either the Platinum stuff from main dealer or valvoline. If your oil temperature doesn't go above 110celsius continuous there is no need to go thicker than 40 which is rated at 100-110celsius. My car runs just below 100 celsius hence I don't go thicker.
Remember it is not just about lots of pressure in the oil system it is also about flow, flow being more important on a turbo charged vehicle than pressure as you need to carry the heat away quickly to replace it with fresh cool oil. Run thick gloopy stuff that needs 120 celsius to operate properly and you wear your bearings and rings out a lot quicker.
Unfortunatelly if this is what you have been running for a long time your bearing clearances will have adjusted themselves and you can't go thinner again without loads of issues.

Ive seen oil temps upto 130 deg c when giving it a hard run around castle combe or other private tracks, but usually 90 deg on motorway.
I did originally run a good 10w 40 oil but after meeting up with forum members and tuning/oil specialists going upto a 50 weight oil seemed the way to go. Since ive had the car from 90k and currently running 172k with no loss of oil or having to give her weekly top ups.
Main issue i have with 40 weight oil is the idle pressure when running hot drops to 1.5 bar which to me was a bit on the low side. With the 10w-50 oil it sits at 2 bar. I guess the lower idle pressure from running the lower viscosity oil means less pressure and hence less oil flow.
i've used 10w60 for years - pressure is usually spot on and was originally the choice oil banded about the froum. I've never organised myself enough to mailorder the 10w50 stuff hence not changing to it before (even if i should have by now) as my local motor factors always stock 10x60. For track driving and general abuse, the car seems to like it and doesn't consume it so never felt the need to change. I'll try a 10w50 and see how the engine reacts
