Hi newbie here so apoligise if this haas been asked before. I have decided after havin a coupe 2.6 v6 for a while now my next car must be an s2. But after research i have disocvered the problem as with most cars, slightly different engines. I can see the ABY is the better engine but how different is it from the 3b? Any input is appreciated. Its just to see if its worth my while looking for just the ABY or would either do. Thanks

This subject often causes arguments about what is better yadda yadda. Search the forum for 3B vs ABY threads but here is a quick reckoner.
3B & ABY are mechanically the same (turbo, wastegate, internals, cam timing, oil pump etc) except for some few small details
ABY has heavier dual mass flywheel - smoother but not as sporty in revving characterstics
ABY has no distributor - dissy and rotor arm often a source of niggles and potential for destructive spark hop if you are really unlucky
ABY has coil packs - often a cause of misfires and bad running when they get old & frail
ABY has slightly larger inlet manifold
ABY is easier to upgrade to RS2 cos it is electrically identical - the ECU can be tweaked for RS2 operation and beyond
ABY has more robust plumbing with less joints from turbo to throttle body, but both can have their leaky moments
ABY has slightly bigger oil cooler and intercooler
ABY motors have stronger 01E gearbox vs 01A which wasnt ever really designed for turbo torque - they still last well though unless heavily abused
Needless to say, a lot of folk have gone for 3B (or lighter) flywheel on the ABY.
A number of folk have also built a '3BY' from a 3B engine with some wiring swaps, coilpacks and ABY or RS2 ECUPaul Nugent
