We live in a sensored and sheltered world, hidden from most of the shocking scenes it presents... all part of our modern society. Other cultures don't sensor this and therefore we are shocked when we see what is 'normal' to their eyes. It happens everywhere, just the BBC don't show it and to be fair the British public don't expect it.
Back then, particularly with a generation of people that would have been some what immunised by WWII, I think the media was a little grittier with death - hence the video footage of a charred body being removed from an F1 car. On the contrary, a topless girl would have caused an outrage back then but any child can pick up The Sun and turn to page #3.
