Coupe or Avant ?

Within the next couple of months, I should be in the market for an S2 (subject to how quickly I get a new job !).

I owned a B3 KV quattro for a few years, and loved everything about it apart from the 140bhp.

I'll probably have a budget of up to £4k, so there are several owners care that would be options, but what are the coupe/avant's like to drive ? I've owned a coupe, but wondered if the avant felt any different ? My head is saying avant as I have a 15 month old son, and a large dog, but my heart is saying coupe (and amazingly my wife is saying coupe as she thinks the avant looks boring). This will be my car (not the family car), so practicality isn't important, but might be useful....

Avants are stiffer but if you do arbs and suspension either can be good. Having had a coupe I'm happier with the avant but do miss the sporty feel of the rear of the coupe. The look on peoples faces when an old estate obliterated them is priceless though. Avant anyday for me

Avant is the stiffer body shell alright, and the rear suspension is much more planted and less prone to body roll. Having said that the coupe is more nimble and much more forgiving on the limit, the weight in the rear end can catch up with you in an avant. Also worth noting is the driving position, you feel like your sitting lower down in the coupe vs an avant.

All depends on what you want it for, daily driver i'd take the avant any day, for a back road / track toy i would build a coupe.

another 1 for the avant fold....and after owning avery nice coupe, there is pro's and con's for both.....

the dog will prefer the avant...

I feel the avant is just as much fun as the coupe on back roads and lanes. Just get it mapped.

Avants handle better than the Coupe due to better rear end, Coupe is lighter and easier to throw around

You cant lose either way pick your personal taste

When I bought my M3 there was/is a similar argument SMG or manual, but That's a story for another day!

Avant anyday, have three, and no Coupe. Has to be ABY either way.

With a family additon, and maybe not the last, as well as a four legged friend, can't quite see how you feel you have a choice.

We five always take the Avant over the MPV, unless there's too much luggage for the Avant, but having said that we've started taking both more recently and I've enjoyed the journey even more, with less luggage and no overly helpful co driver.
