Well if it gets so hot at the bottom of the downpipe it disintegrates placing it just infront of the centre box it should still be hot enough.
As for random roadchecks I think I'll take a leaf out of this guys book

does it make much difference having it decat? I'm getting mine done next week with a sports cat in...but wondering whether its worth the hassle of removing it after the mot!1996 Audi S2 - 295bhp and 326lb/ft - Complete Rebuild Project

I can definitely feel a performance benefit from the de cat, which is why I go through the hassle of swapping come MOT time. It also sounds better without Cats too!

I went from stock to full 2.75" milltek with sport-cat and there was a huge difference. My hand was forced with the latest setup (3" dp with de-cat into milltek centre and back-box) due to power increases, but it does feel far smoother and the noise is a lot better.
I think keeping the milltek kit on the back has made a nice addition as well, because although it makes a nice noise when you rev the car, it isn't boomy cruising at 80 down the motorway.
Best of both worlds

Here it is the same thing with almost any mods on the car being illegal since a long time.
Yet no one gets in trouble with the decat on road checks and for MOT you either have a cash-friendly tester or you just make swappable cats.
Even with HID kits, if it doesn't blind the living hell out of the cop, they usually don't say a word.
I mean, what are they going to say when they stop you? Excuse me sir, your exhaust is smelling cat-free today, sorry, but we have to get your vehicle checked?
That **** does not fly here, and I don't see it happening in the UK either.
I mean, if the road police really have nothing better to do than check random vehicles for decats, then you must really have a perfect crime free country with no stolen cars, no drunk drivers etc... just not going to happen.Comment

So no aftermarket ecus? What do they expect ppl to do with built cars? Crush it? My dad has an old mg midget that used to run on twin su carbs that's been converted to megasquirt and EFI. Now does 40mpg and has better emissions than it ever has. Should he convert back to carbs and ruin consumption/emissions.
Makes no sense.Volcano ABY coupe

and, back in the 1990s when I was occasionally involoved with PSV checks (not sure if it is still the case but)These are carried out by Vosa and the police , they are very tough on vehicles and can prohibit your vehicle from leaving the site of the inspection without rectification work being carried out. I.E if the stop you for having HID headlamps and they are not self cleaning/leveling they will prohibit your vehicle from being used on the road unless the HID'S are removed or it is the daytime when you do not need your headlamps.
They are basically roadside MOT tests ......
it meant that the operator had to get vehicle recovered from the site of the roadside test
"Could you still get around this with say a modern car in an older shell (1.8t's in mk2 golfs) and not have to run a cat?"
Yes - as it is the date vehicle first registered. So the 1988 Golf GTi with a 2 litre TFSI engine and no cat is fine ( and probably still putting out far less in emissions than any mark 2 GTi ever did
