Ive got one of the older ones and its really very good! It feels like a very high quality piece of kit.
My only criticism is that if you have a very dead battery with less than 6v, it will only see it as a motorcycle battery and charge it up to 6v... it needs to have over 7v to be seen as a 12v battery...
Other than that its great and has a winter trickle charge and top up functions.
Im tempted to upgrade if the new one has a LCD display...

I have the same unit myself, and a few in work.
I've had the same prob with flat Motorhome batteries, but if you temporarily connect a small boost pack (to show a higher initial voltage to charger) and then switch charger on, it will happily charge the battery. The boost pack can then be disconnected.
It's annoying that your 30 year old Halfords charger which is only a small transformer and bridge rectifier, will bring the battery up on it's own, but the modern Smart Charger wont

Annoyingly i dont have another charger/booster.
But based on your suggestion i could breifly...connect a charged battery with jump leads to lift that initial voltage to get it going
