Selling a car, what payments to accept.

    Hi guys

I posted an add on gumtree last night for my girlfriends car and there is a guy wanting to pay for it via paypal? What are your thoughts? Could it be a scam?

The ammount is no more than £2250, I understand that getting hold of cash may be tricky but thats probably the safest method is it not?

    What about a bank transfere?

What is the safest method of doing the deal and making sure you actually have the money before letting the car go?

Help on this would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

To be honest at that value i would want to see used notes or cash cleared in the bank. Bank transfers are so easy these days, i would steer clear of the paypal method, no historical reason, just doesn't sound right.

Paypal would leave you exposed if/when the buyer decided the car wasn't up to spec and opens a dispute.

I'd stick with cash or CHAPS - both of which mean the cash is in your hands when you part with the car.

No way would I accept paypal. If the buyer uses a credit card though paypal you are in a world of hurt if they decide they want their money back, Even after the money is in your bank.

2nd that one, I've had issue's with PayPal in the past so wouldn't go that route. Eventually resolved but a real PITA when the *hit hits the fan having to open a case then playing tennis with emails.. Sounds like the buyer hasn't got the money in the first place if he's not prepared to visit the bank for the cash, usually you can have that amount in the same day if not within 24hrs notice..

                  Cash every time.
Even bankers drafts can be forged easily enough, credited to your account, then recalled when they are discovered.

no real need to wait for days now to withdraw paypal cash nowadays.costs a fiver for fast withdrawel(sometimes gets to your bank in a few hours),if the bloke is genuine he won't mind. There is also the paypal access card
