    Oil filter fell off!

Cautionary tale for any td5 owners or those who use garage services !
Ok, we had freezing rain like most of the country
Start the disco to thaw the screens, so drivers side front , go to so passenger side n see alarmingly large n growing oil slick underneath passenger side.
    Engine straight off.
Investigated when got home(after an exciting trip in the sharan with 2wd)
Filter up by the turbo sitting on a bracket about 2 inches lower than it should!
Thread not stripped, must hav taken a while to work loose.
Am gonna shout lots in the morning at the mechanic who did the service
or is it my fault for not doing the oil change myself?
New oil n fingers crossed first that the engine is ok.

Hopefully you caught it in time before any damage has been done. It does *iss you off when you are more than capable of doing a job, but for some reason can't do it and farm it out to someone else to do then have a problem later on.. Fingers X for you on this one buddy.

They probably palmed that oil change job off to the apprentice

Hope everything is ok with it though

Even when you put the filter on by hand until it is good and tight, it takes a good strap wrench to loosen and remove the filter. Somebody didn't even tighten that one. Time to buy some ramps and DIY your oil change.

Will be changing it myself from now on
The rubber seal around the filter was dry so I don't think it d been smeared first
No need for ramps, I can get under the discovery without

Just to be devils advocate! The TD5 oil filter(s) have been located in one of THE most stupid locations that it is physically impossible for most filter wrenches to be used.....

It is a common problem that even if you have a grip like Geoff Capes and the filter is tight they work loose.

Also the make of filter can make a difference... Genuine Land Rover filters tend to stay tight longer than the Britpart ones....

If you get one that manages to stay tight until next service then it will take you 15 to 20 minutes to tap it round with a long screw driver and a hammer. Which induces much swearing and an oily mess down the side of the block!

Well, I ve filled it with oil n out the filter back on-came straight off as soon as car started, oily block is nothing compared to oily driveway.
I ve shouted a lot at the garage down the phone and they re sending someone out, but i think its too late, nasty noises from the engine.
Anyone got an s model avant for sale?
I ve had enough of Land rovers, will be parting it out to try and recoup some of my many spends on it last year including new steering box, all the ace pipes and rams, valve block, new springs and shocks, axle bushes and ebc brakes-I could have bought an s2 with what i ve spend on it
                sad day

Aw, that's rotten luck- I've done the same very recently-spent way too many ££s on an old Jap truck, that should've been spent on my S2. Hope it's not a complete disaster, mate.
