need help / advice for .htaccess file issues

[Error404]

i'm trying to remove the PHP file extensions from URLs on my work website and i can seem to get any code in the .htaccess file to work: I'm not really a techie with this kinda stuff so bear with me!


at present i have in the .htaccess file in the root directory:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.php -f
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1.php

Any pointers?
