discuss close v wide ratio g/boxes

out of interest, whats your views on wide ratio v close ratio gearboxes?

pro`s and con`s on both fronts

my A4 runs 2.5TDi very long lazy ratios 6 sp and on a spreadsheet will do 226mph in 6th @ 7000rpm

although this is amazing for long hauls and crossing the 1/4 mile in 3rd but dunno.......... hmmmmmmmm

my URS4 1st was useless and may have just not been there IMO

Although the c/r 6 speed box has a close 1st gear I really don't find the other ratios "that" close, I suspect an ideal gearbox would be a mismatch of ratios as none really offer the perfect combination in standard form. That said a lot of it comes down to the power of the engine as relatively tall ratios don't seem that long on a 550hp motor as an example.

Some of the modern 8 speed autos run nearly 50mph per 1000 rpm. *It gives massively better economy on a run. *I'd love a much taller 6th on my RS2, but happy with the first 5.

My 3TDi 6 speed ratios are the worst I have come across on an Audi
1st just about gets you to 20mph, 2nd no-where near 50. 3rd little more than 60, then a jump to 100 in 4th then another big gap to get you to 30mph/1000rpm in 5th and in 6th it jumps up again to achieve the 38mph/1000rpm. Wish I'd gone for the Auto version now. Rarely use 1st gear as I can actually get to 40 quicker starting in 2nd?!!!

i ran the Euro TDI gearbox in the 1/4 and even revving to 8800+ i still had to shift to 4th gear. i could squeak by a 1/4 mile in third if i took 3rd gear to 9300, still trapped >137 this way. 10.05 @ 138-139 my best with it shifting to 4th. 600-650 AWHP 20v 4cyl big turbo 32psi Coupe Quattro.

and all the 01E trans that i know of share the same exact first/second gearset, at 3.50 - 1.89.
