You boys are going to think i'm a right traitor now...
I took a new 116d out on a test drive the other week, i was very impressed with the interior, both space and quality.
I understand the new 1 series is bigger than the previous, but i don't plan on spending much time in the back seats and it it's certainly got more leg room than the Renault Clio that it will be replacing
From looking at photo's the front of the car looks aweful, but actually, when i saw in the in the flesh, it's not half as bad. The M-Sport trim tones down the "bread-van" look considerably, and with the 18" alloys looks like a great little hot-hatch from the side. RWD will also make it fun.
I was very tempted to stick more with the eco credentials and go for the 118d (the new 116d ED is rated for 70mpg and £0 road tax), as the 116d i test drove had far more grunt than i'd have given it credit for. But, alas, i couldn't stomach going for the diesel... and things quickly deteriorated into the full-fat 2-litre turbo 125i.
I did almost end up with a z4... the OH wanted it, being the hard-top, and they actually cheaper to buy then the 125 as BMW has some massive discount on them.
I really don't like much about the modern Audi's - they do nothing for me.
There are a couple of models, the TT-RS, the new RS4, but all way above what i've got to spend, and they don't fit the eco/daily run-about requirement.
Quite simply Audi have nothing of any interest along the same lines as the 1 series, and i firmly believe they are playing catch-up with BMW on the engine/turbo side of things with these lower models.
