timing belt issues, god knows ive had enough lol!!

right as some of you may remember ive not had the best luck with timing belts:

    1) first time out after transplant, the belt tensioner failed = head off and 10 inlet valves
    2) second time, 2 weeks after rebuild crank pulley failed = .......see above lol + all pulleys replaced, crank cam etc (my bad, didnt read up about belt failures!)

when it went back on the road this time the belt has allways ran off centre, i.e a bit of the belt hangs over the cam pulley, only bit that was different was the waterpump didnt have the disk on the front as all the ones listed were a different size/more teeth on the pump

    anyone seen this before?

im pulling the motor out soon to change the clutch and flywheel, turbo and manifold and stick my 1000cc/min in there and i will change the belt and pump again but i want this matter resolved

any ideas or past problems with your or customers cars?

    regards Sean

Have you got 2 washers behind the crank pulley by accident?

just a thought but it looks like what would happen if you had put 2 diamond washers in,without looking at etka i am not sure if all AANs were fitted with one at all.iirc from doing timing belts early ones dont have one(what year car did the engine come from?)maybe you have put a washer onto an early engine?

well i only replaced what came off and in the same order, it was fine before, unless the crank pulley is a bit more deeper than the old one but part numbers were identical, and brand new from TPS along with the cam pulley, even though it dont look like it now lol

surely the lack disk on the waterpump face wouldnt allow this would it?

            great minds and all that

It's an easy oversight to do iirc as aren't the pulleys different? one has the washer flush in it and you can think you haven't put one on by mistake

Belt position would be dictated by the crank sprocket not the water pump IMO.

If you have too big a gap ( ie multiple washers ) then the sprocket is too far away from the block bringing the belt out of position

ditto.belt sprocket position dictates belt alignment,if you forget to put the washer in, the belt touches the engine and melts away a couple of mm.btdt on the 1st one i ever did

but i didnt build it from bits, and i used what was there already, im not denying the 2 washers infront of sprocket, but i just cannot remember it being like that lol

guess i will see whn it comes apart again,

is retrofitting RS2 waterpump and belt all i would need or another tensioner needed aswell?

You don't have to replace the whole tensioner, you can buy the roller as a seperate part

Did you happen to replace the crank damper when you did the timing belt? The new one is different than the old one.

There have been three vibration dampers on the 20VTs, 251C, 251H and 251J. The earlier 251C and 251H dampers had a longer snout. The later (and only currently available) 251J had a shorter snout and needed a spacer washer to line things up properly. There is a chance that you might have used a 251H (or C) damper to replace a 251J damper but unknowingly, kept the spacer that only the 251J needed in service. Just speculating here.
