    Final Year Project Ideas

I'll be going into my final year at uni soon and am after some ideas for a final year project. I am studying a BSc in Motorsport Technology and want to do something relevant. Thought I would put it to you lot to see if you have any ideas on what might be good to do.

    Let me know your thoughts

Do you have a formula student team? Always get some good project with that lot.

Keep in mind that FYP's make great bumf in your CV so make sure it's something to show off about.

For mine i developed a Ricardo WAVE model of the Yamaha R6 model, verified it against dyno data, developed new cam profiles, made them and tested, so lots to talk about!

What areas are you interested in? If you want to get into F1, I'd say look at either tyres, vehicle dynamics or powertrains,

Wow that sounds like a great project, did you have much of an understanding of what you were looking at before hand or did you just jump in at the deep end? I wouldn't have a clue where to start.

I am really interested in powertrains and also chassi stuff but have a greater understanding of engines.

We do have a formula student car and that is an are I am interested in, Im having problems thinking of ideas that are actually doable and aren't going to go way off track. (pardon the pun).

Go to Cranfield if you are really into finding a living in Motorsports. I didn't go that route (yet ) but some good friends of mine did so, which makes it a lot less difficult to find a way into Motorsports. (One ended up in WSBK, other does DTM)
They have all the right connections to recieve interships and such from top class companies which i didn't get the chance to apply for by the afore mentioned reason.
(...must say it's far more easier to find such a job in the UK compared to The Netherlands, lucky you..!)

Next to that i may add i am glad i did not do it for now. I am currently working on similar challenging projects with same budgets, working with former F1 team members which have been made redundant during/before the financial crisis...

Make sure you pick a Uni with the right connections for you, and fundings/resources so that they can offer you software packages used by the OEM / branches you are interested in for instance, that's what makes the difference on a job interview from what i've experienced with co-graduates.

Cant say i knew much before hand, just took a lot of reading and speaking to people.

might be worth speaking to the formula student team and seeing if they have any projects. We used to give out quite a few like cooling configuration research, vehicle dynamics stuff like adjustable arb, active diffs etc.

As for going to cranfield to get into motorsport, id say its not necessary at all. theres only about 2 from cranfield out of about 20 where I am. plus having a generic mech eng degree makes you much more diverse and employers prefer it. you've just got to know where to look for applications! Its a very hard industry to crack into, but it's amazing when you have

if your applying to Mercedes next year let me know! deadline is usually around xmas!

The OEMs seem to be getting more into active aero on road cars now, not sure how motorsport relevant that is but might be worth come thought
